PHILLIP ISLAND, AUSTRALIA -- The second day of MotoGP tests at Phillip Island started out in wet conditions today, with intermittent light showers continuing until 1:00.
Both Ducati Marlboro Team riders took the opportunity to try different things, Stoner completing 11 laps on the damp track to confirm the performance of his latest engine spec in these conditions while Marco Melandri enjoyed positive feedback from the GP8 as he rode it for the first time in the wet, completing 35 laps.
The sunshine dried the track in the afternoon and the test continued with Stoner in great form, the World Champion breaking the 1:30 mark on race tires - some four tenths inside the circuit record set in 2005 by a 990cc machine - despite the cold and imperfect track conditions.
Weather forecasts are better for tomorrow, the final day of the session.
"Today I set my fastest lap on tires that had 22 laps on them and that is really positive because it means that the modifications we tried on the set-up have had the desired effect, which was to increase tire durability," Stoner said. "This also allows us to consider using softer tires, at least in the odd race."

Lawson impressed by IMS circuit

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Motorcycle racing legend Eddie Lawson visited the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday, giving the new road course his stamp of approval.
Lawson, a native of Upland, CA, won the 500cc World Championship in 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1989. The 500cc class preceded the MotoGP World Championship as the pinnacle of motorcycle road racing.
Lawson toured the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum and was treated to several passenger-vehicle laps of the famous IMS oval and road course. The inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis GP will take place Sunday, Sept. 14 on the road course.
“It looks they’ve been working really hard, for sure, and I wish I could have raced on something like that when I was racing,” Lawson said. “It looks like they’re going to have a lot of fun out there. I was wish I was back (and) was racing.
"I’ve been all over the world and raced on a lot of racetracks, but you come into this place, and it’s awe-inspiring.”

PHILLIP ISLAND, AUSTRALIA -- Tech 3 Yamaha rider Colin Edwards continued his impressive pre-season form yesterday by setting the fastest time at the start of a three-day test session at the Phillip Island circuit.
Just six days after an exhausting but successful test at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, Edwards clocked his best lap of 1:29.566 on the first of two Michelin qualifying tires he tried shortly after 1pm.
Evaluating new Michelin tires and the latest electronics upgrades from Yamaha, the American's best time on race tires was a 1:30.832 set in a seven-lap run in the afternoon as the Texan completed 77 laps in close to perfect conditions. That was the third fastest time on race tires with reigning world champion Casey Stoner quickest in race trim.
"The bike feels good at this track compared to what I raced with a few months ago," Edwards said. "Yamaha has been working hard and the new parts are definitely a step in the right direction, particularly with the electronics, which has helped on corner entry and exit.
"With a qualifying tire in Malaysia my time didn't get any better. I had a couple of handling issues with the qualifier in Sepang so once I got a good pace going I chucked a couple of qualifiers in. It is the first day but you never know what the weather is going to do down here, and it could be raining tomorrow. We wanted to make sure with the adjustments we were going to make for the qualifier that it was the right way."
James Toseland also impressed by setting the fifth quickest time on only his fourth appearance on the Tech 3 Yamaha YZR-M1. His best time of 1:30.864 on race tires came on his 46th lap of an 81-lap stint, with the British rider immediately on the pace as he returned to familiar territory at Phillip Island.

Reed and Dungey race for three-peat

AURORA, IL – Team San Manuel’s Chad Reed and Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey race for a three-peat in Anaheim as the Monster Energy AMA Supercross returns to Angel Stadium this Saturday for the third and final time in 2008.
This weekend’s AMA Supercross class race will be broadcast in high-definition technology on CBS Sports Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2:00 p.m. CST. The AMA Supercross class race will air on SPEED Saturday, Feb. 9 at Noon EST.
A win this weekend for Reed can place him with Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart as the only riders in AMA Supercross class history to win all three races in Anaheim in the same season. Dungey can join former Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class champions Ryan Villopoto, Ivan Tedesco and Ernesto Fonseca as the only riders to sweep all three Anaheim races in the same season.
Last weekend at San Francisco’s AT&T Park, three different riders led the action-packed main event, including Red Bull Honda’s Davi Millsaps, Torco Fuels’ Kevin Windham and Reed. Reed captured his third race-win of the season in front of 37,322 fans who attended the rain-drenched race.
Yamaha of Troy’s Jason Lawrence won the first Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class race for his career, leading from wire-to-wire. Current AMA Supercross Lites class points leader Dungey rode to a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Lites class main event.
Motorsport/Xtreme Kawasaki’s Thomas Hahn earned the first podium of his 2008 season, finishing second and earning the $1,000 Progressive Holeshot Award.

SUPERSHOW 2008 a success

TORONTO, ON – The continent’s largest and most comprehensive motorcycle show, the North American International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW, came to Toronto at the beginning of January. The Show, now in its 32nd year, welcomed more than 50,000 motorcycle enthusiasts over the three days. More than 400 exhibitors and four huge Accessory Superstores guaranteed visitors found everything they needed for the 2008 riding season – all under one roof and at great show prices.
Feedback from visitors to the SUPERSHOW indicates a strong positive response to the continuation of last year’s new layout of the seven individual halls, each having its own theme. With Hall 1 and 2 dedicated to Touring & Cruisers, Halls 3 and 3A as Industry Showcases, Hall 4's Racing & Performance theme, Hall 4A's focus on Classics & Vintage and Hall 5's Chopper & Custom Bike Showcase, there was something for everyone at this year's SUPERSHOW. Wider, carpeted aisles throughout all the seven halls also made for a more comfortable journey through the 425,000 square feet of exhibits at the Toronto International Centre.
The ‘Fast Women’ theme had show visitors, male and female alike, finding inspiration in people like Trillium Muir, world’s fastest woman on a motorcycle; Vicki Gray, founder of Motoress and advocate to women riders; Iron Butt rider Jean Copas, the first Canadian Woman to complete the US Iron Butt Rally; Helen TwoWheels, long distance rider and packing expert from the US; as well as women’s riding clubs like the Chrome Divas, Motor Maids and Iron Cowgirlz.
The Canada Cup Championships saw more than 150 showbikes competing for a jackpot of $50,000. First Place in the Pro Builders Class went to Markham Custom Cycle for its fabulous ‘Skull Cruncher' custom bike creation. As Best Bike in Show, they took home $12,000 cash, a six foot trophy and won the Canada Cup for the finest showbike in Canada.
Hall 5 featured the best of the best in bike building with custom motorcycles from across Canada as well as U.S. entries from New York and Vermont, many being photographed in the on-site professional photography studio constructed by Easyriders. Showgoers also had the opportunity to check out Jesse James’ Grindhouse Chopper, direct from Quentin Tarantino’s movie ‘Planet Terror’.
Milestones set at the SUPERSHOW included over 25 manufacturer brands being represented, more than any previous SUPERSHOW, and a record-breaking 80 motorcycle riding clubs, user groups and motorcycle associations participating with displays of members’ bikes, from touring and cruising to racing and offroad riding, vintage and marque clubs, and everything in between. Five separate military groups exhibited including motorcycle veterans’ units and the launch of new rides and rallies in support of our troops.

Wider, carpeted aisles throughout all the seven halls also made for a more comfortable journey through the 425,000 square feet of exhibits at the Toronto International Centre.
The ‘Fast Women’ theme had show visitors, male and female alike, finding inspiration in people like Trillium Muir, world’s fastest woman on a motorcycle; Vicki Gray, founder of Motoress and advocate to women riders; Iron Butt rider Jean Copas, the first Canadian Woman to complete the US Iron Butt Rally; Helen TwoWheels, long distance rider and packing expert from the US; as well as women’s riding clubs like the Chrome Divas, Motor Maids and Iron Cowgirlz.
The Canada Cup Championships saw more than 150 showbikes competing for a jackpot of $50,000. First Place in the Pro Builders Class went to Markham Custom Cycle for its fabulous ‘Skull Cruncher' custom bike creation. As Best Bike in Show, they took home $12,000 cash, a six foot trophy and won the Canada Cup for the finest showbike in Canada.
Hall 5 featured the best of the best in bike building with custom motorcycles from across Canada as well as U.S. entries from New York and Vermont, many being photographed in the on-site professional photography studio constructed by Easyriders. Showgoers also had the opportunity to check out Jesse James’ Grindhouse Chopper, direct from Quentin Tarantino’s movie ‘Planet Terror’.
Milestones set at the SUPERSHOW included over 25 manufacturer brands being represented, more than any previous SUPERSHOW, and a record-breaking 80 motorcycle riding clubs, user groups and motorcycle associations participating with displays of members’ bikes, from touring and cruising to racing and offroad riding, vintage and marque clubs, and everything in between. Five separate military groups exhibited including motorcycle veterans’ units and the launch of new rides and rallies in support of our troops.

Pearson opens with a win

LUCERNE, CA -- Defending champion David Pearson proved why he holds the number one plate when he finished first overall at round 1 of the AMA Hare and Hound Series in Lucerne, CA last weekend.
The course conditions couldn't have been better as the rain from the night before and early morning kept the desert ground saturated allowing the riders to race without the normal dusty conditions one is faced with in most Hare and Hound events.
Pearson, the Red Bull KTM factory rider got a great jump on the pack as the riders took off for the 80-mile ride, consisting of two 40-mile loops. He was third at the end of the banners and was able to take the lead quickly after. His teammate David Kamo was just two spots back in third, close to second place rider Destry Abbott.
The top three managed to run a clean race with no problems.
"The best part of the day was looking back at the halfway point and not seeing anybody behind me," Pearson said. "I knew then that the only person that could take the win from me was myself and I wasn't going to let that happen."

Polar Bear Grand Tour Visits Fort Dix, New Jersey
I don't know if you remember, but Fort Dix was in the news in May of 2007 after a terrorist plot was uncovered to attack soldiers at the base. That was after our last Polar Bear Grand Tour run to Fort Dix. We had our 2008 run to Fort Dix last Sunday, January 27, 2008 and security was tighter.
This was my first time back on my trike in three months and it felt good. I've been recovering from the removal of a couple of basal cell carcinomas, one on the back top of my left ear and one on the top right side of my forehead. These skin problems had conspired to keep me from putting a helmet on for nearly three months. Today I bit the bullet, put on my balaclava, gently placed my new Nolan flip-up helmet on my head and fastened the chinstrap. My glasses were rubbing against my ear and that brought a bit of pain. I was hoping that nothing was bleeding back there. The pressure of the helmet against the balaclava and onto the sore on my forehead was noticeable. The helmet felt smaller. Maybe it had compressed a bit from sitting in the garage for the last three months. At any rate, I was going to ride today. First was a four-mile ride to our monthly GWRRA Chapter F meeting. That went OK. Next was the 31 mile ride to Fort Dix. Surprisingly that went well too.
Jane and I rode with three other bikes from Chapter F. I cautioned the riders over the CB as we neared the fort to expect anything at the entrance because of expected tightened security.
The day was alternately sunny and overcast and about 33 degrees. There was a threat of light snow showers. Fort Dix was checking IDs today but not consistently. Sometimes IDs were checked, and sometimes riders were waved by. Some were stopped at the gate because their names were not on the Polar Bear roster. In one case, a rider was left at the gate while his wife was allowed in. Turns out his name was on the list all the time. But most got in.
Here are a few pictures and videos I took at Fort Dix. I confess I was a little apprehensive about taking pictures at the fort. I fully expected to be approached by an MP and have my camera confiscated but that never happened. I worry too much. There are a few pictures of me at the end taken by "Blondie," one of the Chapter F women who rode her own Honda Gold Wing 1800 with us. Hopefully, that will be enough pictures of me for a few years.

Lafferty wins Enduro opener

SUMTER, SC -- The riders and fans could not have asked for a more beautiful day to start off the first round of the AMA National Enduro Series. The weather was sunny with temperatures in the mid 50's as the riders geared up to tackle the course.
Defending National Enduro Champion Mike Lafferty took the early lead in the first of four special tests on the course. Lafferty's Red Bull KTM teammate and runner-up in last year's championship chase, Russell Bobbitt, came into the first check only two seconds off of Lafferty's time. It was evident the two teammates were embarking on another year as each other's toughest competitor.
The two continued to push each other through the sandy course. With the event half over only two seconds separated the hard charging Red Bull KTM teammates. Lafferty finished in a good time at the third check point. Bobbitt was not as fortunate and lost approximately 40 seconds to Lafferty when he got lost on the loop.
Lafferty was holding his own on the fourth test until he crashed. Lafferty was unharmed and remounted his bike to continue on to the finish. Bobbitt won the final test 15 seconds ahead of Lafferty. Although Bobbitt's last minute charge was a valiant effort, it was not enough to win the overall for the day. The eight-time National Enduro Champion, took the overall by less than a minute over Bobbitt.
"I'm excited to come out on top," declared Lafferty at the finish. "Russell rode strong through the whole race, pushing me the whole way. With him and the other tough competitors here (some who came from the GNCC circuit), I am proud that I was able to take this win."
The series continues on Feb. 24 in Greensboro, GA.

Knight wins "The Tough One"

OSWESTRY, NORTH WALES -- Red Bull KTM Off Road Team’s US GNCC champion David Knight claimed his first race win of the ’08 season by dominating the fourth running of the WOR Events The Tough One race.
Already a three-time winner of Britain’s premier extreme hare scramble race Knight made it four wins from four starts with another impressive victory at the Nantmawr Quarry circuit. Joining Knight on the podium were Taddy Blazusiak and Wayne Braybrook in second and third places, respectively.
“It’s great to start the year with a win, and to continue my unbeaten run at The Tough One," Knight said. "I’ve been working hard since Christmas, and have probably ridden more than I did all of last year, so I knew I was ready for the race. A lot of people have been quick to shoot me down because of a few disappointing results at the end of last year. I wanted to win to show them that I’m ready for ’08."
Despite the much hyped and highly anticipated battle between KTM’s two extreme stars Knight and Blazusiak it was UK trials rider Michael Brown that provided the biggest challenge to Knight’s dominance. Winner of the Speed Trial event Brown earned a place in the main The Tough One race and was able to cross the event’s technical terrain much quicker on a trials bike than all other competitors on their enduro machines. He worked his way past Knight to earn himself £1000 for leading the race at the halfway stage before stopping.
Despite becoming one of a number of riders to fall on one of the tire sections early in the race Knight had things pretty much all his own way in and around the Nantmawr Quarry from the one-hour mark onwards. Second off the start he was soon past Braybrook and quickly started opening up a healthy lead while his eventual closest rival Blazusiak made several small but costly mistakes on the opening laps.
Comfortably ahead as darkness started to fall Knight maintained his lead to come within little more than 25 seconds of lapping Blazusiak.

AURORA, IL – Louisville’s Broadbent Arena was the site of night two of the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series on Saturday.
In the AMA Arenacross Class Ohio’s Nathan Skaggs got the jump to win the Toyota Certified Used Vehicle Hole Shot award. Skaggs handled the field for several laps before Kawasaki’s Brock Sellards and Honda’s Chad Johnson passed him in the rhythm section. Sellards stayed out front for most of the race before allowing Johnson to pass for the lead and the win. Keith Johnson was able to pass Skaggs to finish out the top three.
Kelly Smith had an off-night, finishing sixth, which extended Chad Johnson’s points lead to 25.
During the AMA Arenacross Lites class main event, Suzuki’s Jimmy Albertson outlasted the field to win the main event and the AMA Arenacross Lites South Regional championship. Gray Davenport and Travis Sewell finished second and third respectively.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Team San Manuel’s Chad Reed won his third Monster Energy AMA Supercross race at AT&T Park Saturday night despite a rain-soaked track before 37,322 fans. Battling the pouring rain, Yamaha of Troy’s Jason Lawrence won the first Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class race of his career.
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Tim Ferry led the AMA Supercross class through turn 1, winning the $1,500 Progressive Holeshot Award with Torco Fuels Honda’s Kevin Windham on his back wheel. Reed started mid-pack and staged a remarkable comeback.
Windham moved into the lead on the opening lap before being passed by Red Bull Honda’s Davi Millsaps on lap 4. Reed moved into third place behind Windham on lap 5. On the same lap, Windham crashed, allowing Reed to assume second place.
“I did make some mistakes out there tonight, and I was able to get a little luck,” said Reed. “I am happy to come back after the bad start I had. I am looking forward to racing on a dry track next weekend in Anaheim.”
Millsaps threw away the lead on lap 6 and Reed was once again handed the lead. Windham finished second and Millsaps finished third.
Motorsport/Xtreme Kawasaki’s Thomas Hahn won the $1,000 Progressive Holeshot Award to open the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class main event with Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Austin Stroupe in tow. Following close behind through turn 1, Lawrence opened a huge lead after passing Stroupe and Hahn.
Lawrence held on for the win followed by Hahn and Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Bret Metcalfe, who finished second and third respectively.

The Walton Amateur Grand National Championships and Canadian Motosport Racing Club (CMRC) have finalized the details in regards to the addition of the Schoolboy class for the 2008 Amateur GNC's held Aug. 12-17.
The new class is a structured stepping stone with the ultimate goal of continuing to produce tomorrow's champions. Riders who are a minimum 12 years old as of the date of the
event and 15 years of age as of Jan. 1, 2008 are eligible and any motorcyle with a minimum displacemnt of 85cc and maximum displacement of 153cc, with a minimum wheel size of 17 inch front and 14 inch rear can compete.

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Corona Extra Honda Racing has announced its rider and team lineup for the 2008 AMA Superbike Series. The big news is participation in SuperStock, a class the team knows very well with two prior AMA national championships. The expected competitiveness of the new-for-’08 Honda CBR1000RR convinced the team to return to the class.
Riding the Corona Extra Honda CBR1000RR Superbike will be Matt Lynn. Lynn, who hails from Georgia, rode the factory MV Augusta in the 2007 AMA Superbike class. In its first year of U.S. competition, Lynn took the MV to six top 10 finishes.
Racing the Corona Honda Superstock CBR1000RR is former Team Jordan rider Jake Holden. Holden racked up six top 10 Superstock finishes in 2007 and four visits to the podium. His final ride of the season netted him first place at Laguna Seca, a career-best performance.
Racing operations will be led by manager Dwayne McCracken, supported by crew chiefs Walker Jemison and Marty Ashmore. Bree Poland will make sure the Coronas are cold and food hot in the world renowned hospitality program!

Kallio fastest at Jerez

Red Bull KTM factory riders Mika Kallio and Hiroshi Aoyama launched their bid for the 2008 250cc world title with solid results in the first pre-season tests at Jerez. The rivals and teammates came in fastest and second fastest on day three Sunday.
Both riders were positive about the outcome of the first session and Kallio, who put in the fastest lap of 1:43.303 noted: "It's good to be in front of the Aprilias. We didn't push too hard on the first and second day. We concentrated on going faster into the fast corners and we made some improvements on the suspension."
Kallio put in 55, 50 and 57 laps respectively over the three days and Aoyama was on his bike for 68, 57 and 79 laps. Aoyama, who came in second fastest on day three with a time of 1:43.517, said he was feeling positive.
"This was the first time back on the bike since my holiday in Japan so I had to get the feeling back on day one," he said. "It was already better on the second day and the third day was good. We worked on the handling and we put in some good lap times."
Also out on his Repsol KTM factory machine was Spanish rider Julian Simon who was on board a 125cc KTM factory bike in 2005 and 2006. Overall KTM will have a much bigger presence on the grids in the 2008 season supporting a number of teams in addition to the official factory team.
The factory team, together with more of the KTM supported teams will be back on the track next weekend at nearby Valencia.
Joining Simon were his two young teammates in 125cc, Esteve Rabat and Marc Marquez, who took advantage of the Jerez tests to get to know the bikes they will be riding in the 2008 season.

AURORA, IL – The Broadbent Arena at the Kentucky State Fair Grounds played host to Toyota AMA Arenacross Series Friday night. The building treated Arenacross riders to a much larger track than normal.
In the AMA Arenacross class Tom Hofmaster grabbed the Toyota Certified Used Vehicle $200 holeshot award and led several laps with points leader Chad Johnson running second and Kentucky’s Tyler Bowers in third. Kelly Smith was forced to detour around a start crash and worked his way to third. Bowers' second place finish gave Chad Johnson a five point gain on Smith. Monster Kawasaki rider Brock Sellards finished eighth after going down several times in the main event.
During the AMA Arenacross Lites class local favourite Bowers blistered the field leading nearly every lap. Jimmy Albertson and Shane Sewell finished out the podium.

BMF highlights Bus Lane Trial cover up
Last Friday the BMF put out a release hightlighting the "Bus Lane Trial Cover Up".
The British Motorcyclists Federation have accused London Mayor Ken Livingston’s office of putting motorcyclists lives at risk by failing to authorise the use of London’s bus lanes by motorcycles.
Apparently along overdue TfL (Transport for London) report has been leaked which shows that accidents were nearly halved over a three-year period on two trial routes where motorcycles were allowed into bus lanes, with a 42% reduction in the rate of collisions.
So I'm sure like me you'd have thought that would have been the green light for motorcycles to be able to use bus lanes in London. No wrong, think again. Its motorcycles scooters and mopeds we're talking about here not pedal cycles!! The anti-motorcycling attitude rears its head again.
Apparently Mayoral staff have now ordered a re-write of the report to avoid a green back-lash from the cycle lobby. Luckily for us bikers the BMF will now be making a formal complaint against the Mayor who is also Chairman of Transport for London.

More anti-biking crap, but MAG fights for us all!
Well thank god for MAG battling away for motorcyclists rights in the UK. The latest crack pot thing to come out, is that the Home Office propose to increase the statutory charges for the removal, storage and disposal of motorcycles by the police, by a whopping 300%.
That's a flat £300 charge and an additional £15 a day storage.
MAG have responded to the consultation process (which closed on the 25th Jan) by
" highlighted the totally unjustified 300% increase and brought to the attention of the Home Office failures in communication between the police, insurers, and the recovery companies which results in unnecessary delays in the release of impounded bikes and escalating costs incurred by the biker"
Well lets hope MAG get this proposal put in the bin where it belongs.

AMA Directors elected

PICKERINGTON, OH -- The American Motorcyclist Association has announced the results of its recent elections for the AMA Board of Directors. In the Southeast Region, incumbent Carl Reynolds of Danville, VA, was re-elected. In a special election in the Northeast Region to fill a Board vacancy, Joseph W. Bromley of Warrington, PA was elected.
In addition to his experience as a dealer and promoter, Mr. Reynolds has been active in the AMA for more than 30 years. He first joined the AMA Board of Directors in 1991 and previously served as chairman.
In 2007, the AMA Board made changes to stagger the terms of Board members. To implement these changes, Mr. Reynolds was elected to a one-year term as Southeast Region representative. An election will be held in the Southeast Region in 2008 for a full three-year term.
Mr. Bromley was president of AMA District 6 for 12 years and was an AMA Congress delegate. He operates a family-owned dealership and has won numerous AMA amateur racing titles. He was elected to a three-year term on the Board.
The AMA Board of Directors consists of 12 members. Six individual Directors are elected by the general membership in their respective regions and six corporate Directors are elected by the corporate membership.
Searle heading for America

Preparing for his debut on the US racing circuit, Great Britain's Tommy Searle signed a two-year contract (2009-2010) with KTM North America.
The 19-year-old from England has turned heads since his first appearance on the international stage. In 2007 he earned 12 podium finishes including three race wins in the highly competitive MX2 World GP class. Accordingly, the FIM honoured him with the Jan de Groot Award for most promising young talent.
Searle's career with KTM began at the end of 2006 when he signed on to contest the 2007/2008 Grand Prix Series as part of the well-recognized KTM Factory Team. KTM Off-Road Racing Director, Pit Beirer recognized Searle in 2006.
"His riding and rate of progression make him an excellent member of our MX2 team and we are now excited for his future achievements in the U.S.," Beirer said.
Searle will compete in the 2009/2010 Motocross Lites Series.
"I am happy to sign with KTM in the U.S.," Searle said. "This has always been a dream of mine. I am looking forward to working with the whole team; KTM is where I want to be."

Suzuki Australia has announced a new partnership with Joe Rocket, which will see the manufacturer's Australian Superbike outfit known as Team Joe Rocket Suzuki.
As part of an ongoing relationship with Mat Mladin Imports, the popular clothing company takes over naming rights sponsorship of the five-time Australian championship-winning team. Yoshimura branding will continue to feature prominently on motorcycles, rider apparel and leathers, while Mack Trucks also joins the team as a partner.
"Suzuki is very excited about the new road racing season and our new partnerships with Joe Rocket and Mack Trucks; it's great to have them on board," said Perry Morison, General Manager, Motorcycles, Suzuki Australia. "The new GSX-R1000 was a star performer last year, and with a season of development under its belt we're looking to own the racetrack in 2008."
Team Joe Rocket Suzuki will field an unchanged rider line-up in the upcoming season with former Australian Superbike Champions Shawn Giles, Craig Coxhell and Supersport rising star Josh Waters remaining with the factory squad.
Waters will be the first to race under the new Team Joe Rocket Suzuki banner next weekend, Feb. 3, in a non-championship Supersport event at Eastern Creek supporting the A1 Grand Prix motor-racing event. All three riders will head to Phillip Island next month as part of the circuit's World Superbike round before the Australian Superbike and Supersport Championships kick off a fortnight later at Eastern Creek.

Pedrosa gets metal

Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa underwent surgery yesterday in Barcelona to fix the right hand injury he suffered when he crashed at Sepang on Tuesday.
The Spaniard was diagnosed to have suffered a fracture in the second metacarpal and three diaphysary fragments, the bones in the middle section of the metacarpian. The operation, which fixed the damage with a titanium plate and seven screws, was carried out by Dr Xavier Mir at the USP Institut Universitari Dexeus.
The usual recovery period for such an injury is six weeks, but Dr. Mir believes Pedrosa should be able to return to riding sooner than that, if all goes well with his recuperation.
Teammate Nicky Hayden resumes testing at Phillip Island, Australia next week, Jan. 30-Feb. 1.

Hayden fastest on final day

Repsol Honda's Nicky Hayden topped the charts on the final day of MotoGP testing in Sepang, Malaysia today with a time of 2:00.326 set on Michelin qualifying tires.
After spending some time in the morning working with the new pneumatic valve engine in his RC212V the 2006 World Champion reverted to a conventional set-up in the afternoon to set his fast time.
The Kentuckian also recorded a 2:01.6 on race tires in the sweltering conditions, with temperatures again in the mid-30s Celsius.
“I used qualifiers for my fastest lap and they worked well,” said Hayden. “After that we did a batch of front tires because one of my weak points here is that sometimes I struggle when this track gets hot.
"I did the best lap I’ve ever done round here on race tyres on lap 18, a 2:01.6. At the end of three long days that wasn’t too bad. I used a 16.5 on that run but I’ve also been trying some 16 rears here. The first time I tried the 16 last year I liked it. I’m the one who really pushed Michelin to keep going and stay with it and I’m pretty happy they did."
Defending World Champion Casey Stoner was second quickest today for Marlboro Ducati with a 2:00.660 set on Bridgestone qualifiers. His best effort on race rubber, recorded late in the morning was a 2:00.964.
"We couldn't have started the year better," said the Australian, recovering from a shoulder injury. "My shoulder feels better every day and now I know I can get back to full training. This morning we tried some qualifying tires on only our second run out. We set a good lap time although I think if we'd have tried them a little later, when the track was warmer, we could have broken the two-minute mark."
Jorge Lorenzo of Fiat Yamaha was third fastest at 2:00.766 with Tech3 Yamaha's Colin Edwards next up with a time of 2:01.179. That effort just shaded Kawasaki's John Hopkins, who finished the day fifth with a 2:01.198.
Lorenzo suffered a fall during a race simulation run but was uninjured and continued his testing program.
Valentino Rossi was sixth on his Fiat Yamaha at 2:01.425.

Defending World Champion Casey Stoner was second quickest today for Marlboro Ducati with a 2:00.660 set on Bridgestone qualifiers. His best effort on race rubber, recorded late in the morning was a 2:00.964.
"We couldn't have started the year better," said the Australian, recovering from a shoulder injury. "My shoulder feels better every day and now I know I can get back to full training. This morning we tried some qualifying tires on only our second run out. We set a good lap time although I think if we'd have tried them a little later, when the track was warmer, we could have broken the two-minute mark."
Jorge Lorenzo of Fiat Yamaha was third fastest at 2:00.766 with Tech3 Yamaha's Colin Edwards next up with a time of 2:01.179. That effort just shaded Kawasaki's John Hopkins, who finished the day fifth with a 2:01.198.
Lorenzo suffered a fall during a race simulation run but was uninjured and continued his testing program.
Valentino Rossi was sixth on his Fiat Yamaha at 2:01.425.

MCIA speaks up for motorcycling!
David Taylor, chief executive of the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA) is calling for government, legislators, local authorities and transport planners to start treating motorcycling as a serious and relevant alternative to the use of cars and public transport.
Well about time too! Why oh why is motorcycling constantly ignored in the UK, as a viable alternative form of congestion reducing transport! Thousands of people use motorcycle, scooters and mopeds to commute to and from work or just to get from A to B. Motorcycling is a cheap enjoyable form of transport, yet it's IGNORED!!

Australia's best motorcycle roads. Murray River Rd
Murray River Road, VIC.Of the many great rides I enjoyed in Victoria on recent my moto-gp tour, this one certainly stood out.I had faint memories of this road in my mind before riding it. I remember this road from when I was very young on holiday with my parents, caravan in tow. Airplanes and Motorcycles
Today was the Polar Bear Grand Tour visit to the Flying "W" Airport in Medford, New Jersey. It was a really cold day with temperatures around 25 degrees and a biting wind. Not many riders standing around outside today. They were all standing on line inside waiting for the sign-in to open at 11:30 a.m.
The Flying "A" is a real operating airport for small planes. It was the first time that the Polar Bears had visited this intriguing site. While we were there, I observed several takeoffs and landings of small airplanes and I intently watched a small helicopter doing maneuvers right in front of me.

2008 Motorcycle Models - Links to Information
I have just updated my motorcycle makes and models information that links to the major motorcycle manufacturers' Web sites for 2008 models. Each model link provides pictures, specs, descriptions, prices, and more for 2008 motorcycle models.
The manufacturers are constantly evolving their Web sites and seem to enjoy restructuring many of their URLs with no thought to other Web sites that may be linking to them. That's why this mid-year update was done.
At this time of year, many riders are doing research to determine what bike they want to buy next. Hopefully, these 2008 Motorcycle Model links will be useful.

Major Motorcycle Rallies for 2008 - It's Time to Plan
In the off season, many riders like to plan rides to various motorcycle rallies. I have just updated my motorcycle rally article and schedule for 2008 to assist you.Motorcycle rallies (biker rallies) are simply gatherings of riders and motorcycles at specified times and places usually with attendant vendors, food, games, and other activities.
Motorcycle rallies or biker rallies may last from a day to more than a week. Some major motorcycle or biker rallies are built around organized professional motorcycle races.
Motorcycle rally attendance varied widely from a low of a couple of dozen riders or less to huge organized rallies with hundreds of thousands of riders.

The picture shows me raising my arm after I parked my bike on Main Street at the 1993 Sturgis Rally. That was the year of the great Midwest floods.
