New Zealand motorcycle atlas

I just ordered a copy of the above. I am off to New Zealand next month.

Circumstances mean it will just a be week fly/drive holiday on the south island. At this time of year I would not be at all comfortable on a motorcycle over there however it will serve as a good introductory trip for a future motorcycle tour.

I have long wanted to tour New Zealand (by motorcycle of course) but

A Camping We Will Go

After Breakfast we rode our bikes to Mount Rushmore where motorcycles have their own entrance, and the ticket is valid throughout the year.

We Parked the bikes and went inside to view the Monument, and visited the Sculptor's Studio as well as visit the Display Center.

We went back to the hotel, and I had to work on the reservations for the day especially since we were targeting Sioux Falls. It turned out that there were no Hotels with Vacancies any where close to Sioux Falls due to the big amount of motorcyclists riding into Sturgis the next few days.

Luckily we still have our tents and sleeping bags so I reserved a camp site in Mitchell SD.

The ride was very windy most of the way with the bikes leaning almost 45 degrees against the strong winds. We then started to chase a thunderstorm getting some rain while on it's edge.

At any one time during the ride there were always motorcycles on the other side of the road going to Sturgis. We reached the campsite early enough to put up our tents, and go into town for a meal.

That night I met an elderly gentlemen who drives an RV in the laundry room who stated that the South Dakota is known for their strong winds and that Minnesota was better.

Trail work gets underway

From the National Trails Coalition

OTTAWA, ON – Work is set to begin across Canada on hundreds of outdoor trails, which will help to create jobs and enhance the country’s national trail system.

The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), and Terry Norman, National Coordinator, National Trails Coalition (NTC) announced on Thursday that over 500 trail projects will benefit from the Government’s $25 million investment in recreational trails, as part of the Government’s Economic Action Plan.

“As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, Canada is proud to provide the first payment of $12.5 million to the National Trails Coalition to get construction underway,” said Minister of State Lunn. “By partnering with the National Trails Coalition we are boosting local economies, creating jobs, getting shovels in the ground and providing Canadians with better quality trails.”

The funds will be used to create, upgrade and sustain recreational trails throughout Canada. The first payment of $12.5 million is part of the Government of Canada’s $25 million commitment that will be matched by the NTC and their provincial, territorial, municipal or private funding partners for eligible projects.

Applications for this funding were received between May 26 and June 26. With the intake for this funding now complete and projects approved, this first payment to the National Trails Coalition will allow work on trails to begin right away and generate economic activity in Canada’s construction sector.

“This $25 million funding initiative has, for the first time in trail development history, made it possible for a growing network of multiple-use trails to be built across Canada,” stated Terry Norman, National Coordinator for the NTC. “With over 500 shovel-ready trail projects approved for completion by March 2010, the NTC believes this is the first step in providing trail infrastructure and tourism products that will be used by millions of Canadians and visitors to Canada.”

The NTC is made up of the following non-profit organizations and their provincial/territorial affiliates: Canadian Trails Federation, Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations and the Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council.

In June 2009, Prime Minister Stephen Harper was awarded the highest honour granted by the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations (CCSO) for delivering on his commitment to expand and improve trail infrastructure through the Economic Action Plan.

Daytona to construct dirt track

From Daytona International Speedway

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Daytona International Speedway, “The World Center of Racing” and home to prestigious events with stock cars, sports cars, motorcycles and karts, will construct a quarter-mile dirt track located outside Turns 1 and 2 in the West Lot, Track President Robin Braig announced.

The project was necessitated by the City of Daytona Beach’s redevelopment plans for Municipal Stadium, which includes replacing the dirt used for the Flat Track racing events with sports turf.

Construction on the quarter-mile dirt track, which will be made up of lime rock, will start in the early fall and be completed in time for next year’s March 3-4 AMA Pro Racing Flat Track motorcycle events, which are a part of 2010 Daytona 200 Week By Honda.

The new dirt track at Daytona International Speedway, which can also be utilized for other events such as the high performance karts from the World Karting Association, will have more than 5,000 temporary seats and lighting will be provided by Musco Lighting.

“Over the years, Municipal Stadium has been a great venue for us and the City of Daytona Beach has been a great partner,” Braig said. “With their redevelopment plans for Municipal Stadium, which included replacing the dirt that we used for the Flat Track with sports turf, this was a logical step.

“We’re excited about the addition of this new venue to our historic racing facility. The new dirt track is going to take the excitement of our popular Flat Track motorcycle races to new levels and give us additional opportunities to host other events during the year.”

“Moving to ‘The World Center of Racing’ for our Grand National Flat Track races during Bike Week is fantastic news,” said Mike Kidd, Director of Flat Track for AMA Pro Racing. “This will allow us to kick off the 2010 short track racing season in grand style.”

Nova Scotia racer soaks up pressure

From Professional Motorsports Productions

TORONTO, ON – The pressure is on Truro, NS native Brian Blaauwendraat, but the 24-year-old motorcycle road racer doesn’t mind. In fact, he likes it that way.

Blaauwendraat is facing a couple of critical races in his young career. It starts this weekend with the fourth round of the Atlantic Roadracing Championship at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, NS That is followed Aug. 7-9 by the biggest weekend in Maritime motorsports as AMP plays host to the sixth round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship national title chase.

Blaauwendraat is currently the runaway leader in both the Pro Superbike and Pro Sport Bike classes of the ARL series, having won every race so far. But this weekend he will be up against his toughest competition of the year as a number of the national series regulars have come east to get in some practice before the Parts Canada weekend.

“I know I can run fast when the pressure’s on,” Blaauwendraat says. “It’s going to be pretty exciting this weekend with quite a few national riders here. But that will be good for me. It was the same last year, and I know running against guys like Clint McBain [the eventual national Superbike runner-up] was really good practice for me heading into the national.”

Blaauwendraat has only been able to run a partial schedule with the national tour, so the Aug. 7-9 Parts Canada Superbike event will offer a rare chance for him to strut his stuff in front of the key players on the Canadian road racing scene. Despite the backing of Honda Canada and Dartmouth, N.S. dealership Pro Cycle, Blaauwendraat has been racing on a tight budget and he has missed two of the five events so far.

Last season Blaauwendraat ran the full national campaign as he found himself in the thick of the battle for the HJC Pro Rookie of the Year Award. He narrowly lost out to Alex Welsh, who then picked up a factory ride with Canadian Kawasaki Motors.

“The budget is the huge thing,” he explains. “When I saw I had a chance at Rookie of the Year I really couldn’t afford to miss a race. So I spent whatever I had, maxed out credit cards, trying to get to each round. Now I’m not only paying for this year’s racing, but trying to pay off last year as well.”

While Blaauwendraat didn’t pick up a factory ride like Welsh, his efforts did get the attention of Honda Canada, who helped set him up with a 2009 CBR600RR. Up to that point in his career he had been racing the same 2005 Honda, making his efforts last season all the more impressive.

But while having the most modern equipment available never hurts, adapting to the 2009 bike has brought its challenges. The ’05 Honda may have been old, but in some respects it was like that well worked in baseball mitt; Blaauawendraat knew it intimately and was able to get the maximum from it.

He’s still finding the limits of the new bike, and that has been a frustrating process at times.

“The bike is way more powerful and it feels good, but once I get down to my best times I feel like I’m hitting a wall, there’s something holding me back,” Blaauwendraat explains. “I can’t pinpoint what it is.”

He will use this weekend’s ARL regional to work with mechanic Darin Marshall and try some new set-up combinations with the bike in an effort to unlock its potential.

“I have a comfortable points lead in both classes, so now is the time to do it,” he points out. “This weekend we’ll try some different stuff.

“Honda and Pro Cycle have been great, and I have Pro-Tech Suspension as a sponsor, but even so, there’s not much of a team behind me. When I come off the track I don’t have a suspension guru waiting to make changes to the bike.”

While Blaauwendraat continues to be the class of the ARL regional scene, his brief national appearances have been frustrating. Part of the problem has been adapting to the new bike, but another factor has been the increased depth of the field, especially in the Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike class.

“I think everyone knows just how deep the field is in Sport Bike,” he says. “Last year I was getting top 10 finishes everywhere, but at Calabogie this year I was fighting for 15th spot with Francis Martin [a two- time Canadian Superbike champion] and it was one of the best races of my life.”

Blaauwendraat heads home 17th in the class point standings although he is confident of a strong showing in the AMP national event. It was at his home track that he burst onto the Canadian scene with a dominant victory in the 2007 Amateur Sport Bike national. Last year he put his old Honda into the top 10 Pirelli SuperPole shootout in the Superbike class and finished in the top six in three out of the weekend’s four Pro races.

“I’m going for top 10 finishes for sure at the national,” he says of his prospects for the Aug. 7-9 weekend. “And I’d like to be in SuperPole again; that was a great experience.”

Blaauwendraat hopes a solid weekend at the Parts Canada Superbike national can lead to bigger things in his racing career.

“I hope that Honda Canada and Pro Cycle will want to help me out more next year,” says the mechanic for a John Deere dealership in Truro. “Otherwise I don’t know what my options are. I’d really like another go at the full national series. I don’t feel like I’ve had a real crack at it yet.”

Hall of Fame banquet heads west

From the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame

MARKHAM, ON -- "The Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame will take a big step to becoming truly national in scope when the Annual Induction Banquet for 2010 is held in Vancouver," said John Cooper, President of the Foundation that operates the Hall of Fame. "This is an exciting development for all of motorcycling and we expect the 2011 event to be in Montreal."

A local committee for the Vancouver event has been struck, and is now seeking a suitable venue. This year's event, the fourth annual, will be held Oct. 24 in Toronto.

"Inductees want to celebrate with their friends and family, and cross-Canada travel can be prohibitively expensive," observed Dave Lloyd, a Director of the Foundation and former Chair of the Selection Committee. "In fact, we had one inductee from the west who, while delighted at the selection, was not able to have anyone in attendance to receive and celebrate the recognition."

"In July last year (2008), the Board made a decision that 2009 would mark the beginning of a 'Central-West-East' pattern," said Peter Jacobs, Secretary to the Hall of Fame and President of the Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada, title sponsor of the Banquet.

The Toronto event was confirmed for 2009, and calls were made for "Expressions of Interest" from local groups to host the event in 2010 and 2011.

"Our goal was to have the destination and venue for the next year confirmed and ready to announce at the current banquet, or earlier," he said. "Vancouver stepped up, and we are thrilled at the enthusiasm shown."

The local committee is chaired by Kellee Irwin, Vice-President of the Foundation. Irwin is based in Vancouver. Committee membership is being expanded, and will include industry, the training community, collectors/curators, event management and the rider community.

"Our objective is to host this National event and add a local flavour," said Irwin. "There are numerous individuals and organizations in the West who are worthy of induction. It will be great to celebrate their achievements and contributions right here with all their friends and family."

Founded by Bar and Hedy Hodgson in 1999, the Canadian International Motorcycle Heritage Museum Foundation exists to preserve and protect Canadian motorcycle history for the benefit of the motorcycling community. They founded the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2005, with the first inductions made in May of 2006.

The Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada (MCC) is the title sponsor of the Annual Induction Banquet, and has been since the Hall's inception. More than $100,000 has been contributed by MCC to operation of the Foundation.

The 2009 Hall of Fame Induction Banquet & Reunion will be held on Saturday evening, Oct. 24 at the Sheraton (formerly Renaissance) Toronto Airport Hotel & Conference Centre, 801 Dixon Road in Toronto. The event, emceed by Pat Gonsalves, will feature an audio-visual presentation on each inductee, a display of special motorcycles, a silent auction to raise funds for the Foundation and, of course, a gourmet meal. A cash bar is offered.

Tickets are $125, with "deep discounts" for "early bird" purchase and MCC members. Tables of eight or 10 can be requested. Visit the websites for more details (www.motorcyclehalloffame.ca OR www.motorcycling.ca/halloffame).

Allen gets it done in Ashcroft

From Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada

ASHCROFT, BC – Waves of heat rippled off of the N’lakakpxm Eagle Motorplex pavement and a strong headwind bullied its way down the quarter-mile drag strip, conditions usually not conducive to great drag racing.

Despite the odds, western series points leader Nick Allen from Redline Harley-Davidson rolled up to the tree, stuck his nose in the paint of his Harley-Davidson V-Rod Destroyer and did the unbelievable by setting a new national record of 144.02 miles per hour.

As the filament in the green start light started to warm, Allen was off with an unimaginable 0.000 reaction time and a top speed of 144.02 miles per hour in the first elimination round of the event. Clearly, the gauntlet had been thrown and all the other competitors could do was watch as Allen performed his magic once again to work through the field on his way to a final-round showdown with Shaun Rude.

With Allen’s incredible run to earn a bye, elimination round one saw Rude, racing for Harley-Davidson Grande Prairie and Heritage Harley-Davidson, face off against Dennis Harkin, supported by Harley-Davidson of Edmonton and Gasoline Alley Harley-Davidson. Rude came out on top with an ET of 9.707 and a reaction time of 0.125.

Kelly McCuaig from Harley-Davidson of Prince George bested Mike Evanyshyn to move into round two action with a 10.287 and reaction time of -0.27. Ken Trommel made quick work of Dale Sweeney with a brilliant reaction time of 0.00 and an ET of 10.094.

In round two action, Allen continued his march to the finals, beating Trommel while Rude got ahead of the over-enthusiastic McCuaig, setting the stage for the final battle between Allen and Rude.

Allen took the narrow victory with an ET of 9.565, while Rude broke the beam with an ET of 9.659. Although Rude had an impressive reaction time of 0.032, Allen bested him with a 0.016.

Pet Cock Tip....errr, I mean here's a petcock tip

Ha! got your attention. No this is not pornographic. It is the part of a non fuel injected, or carburated bike that controls your fuel flow.
Off, Run and Reserve are the three positions. O.K., Still sounds kind of pornographic talking about three positions. Stay with me, there is a point cumming, I mean coming.

While in Colorado on storm duty, I was on my way back to the airport rental to return my rental vehicle. It was about 97 degrees, with no breeze, and no clouds. I spotted a guy on the side of the freeway sitting on a guard rail next to his motorcycle. He was not on the phone, and not doing anything, which led me to believe he might need a hand. (Of course I stopped).

I asked, "Are you just resting, or is the bike giving you trouble?"

He said, "I'm out of gas."

Me,"I gotta ask the obvious, how bout the reserve?"

Him, "I tried it. No gas. Won't start."

Me, "Let me run through the scenarios. Were you riding, realized you ran out of gas, and hit reserve, and ran that out too?"

Him, "No."

Me, " You had it on reserve when you left, not realizing you were on reserve, and drained all of the gas?"

Him, "No, I ran out of gas, coasted to this spot here, turned on the reserve and tried to start it a couple of times. It won't start, so there must not be any gas."

Me, "There's gotta be enough gas in there to get you about 20 miles or so. You have a pressurized petcock. You need to give your throttle about two to three full turns while the bike is off, hit the choke, and she should start right up. Mind if I give it a try?"

Him, "Sure, go ahead."

I gave it a try, and she fired right up.

Him, "Thanks a million! You are a life saver. Where the hell were you 45 minutes ago?"

I followed him to the Airport area nearest gas station, and was then on my way home.

I posted this story not to boast about what I did for this guy, but to share a little knowledge for those of you who might not already know this. Hopefully I can save someone else the headache of thinking they are screwed when they are really just fine.

Happy trails!

Titles on the line in Topeka

From AMA Pro Racing

TOPEKA, KS - At least one 2009 championship will be decided and several other season titles could be on the line at this weekend's Tornado Nationals presented by BriggsAuto.com, which marks the return of top-level AMA Pro Road Racing to Heartland Park Topeka for the first time since 1991.

The highlight of the Tornado Nationals will be dual Saturday and Sunday races for the premier AMA Pro National Guard American Superbike and AMA Pro Daytona SportBike divisions.  Also on the card is the season-ending event for the West-division riders of AMA Pro SuperSport, who will compete head-to-head with their counterparts from the East in the last of this season's three dual-championship shootouts. The schedule also includes a two-hour AMA Pro SunTrust Moto-GT race.

Championship points leader Mat Mladin (No. 7 Rockstar/Makita Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000) is a virtual lock to win the 2009 AMA Pro American Superbike title and he could do just that at Heartland Park. The Ironman Australian has an unmatched record of 10 wins so far this season, including a streak of seven in a row to open the year. He has been AMA Pro Road Racing's top rider in 2009 and has won all but four races and captured seven of eight pole positions. The most recent round at Mid-Ohio marked the only event this year where Mladin failed to win a race or the pole, but he still managed to finish third in the Saturday final and left Ohio having given up just one point of his big championship lead.

He has a strong 126-point championship lead, 390 - 264, over Yoshimura Suzuki teammate and nearest challenger Tommy Hayden (No. 22 Rockstar/Makita Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000) and Mladin will seal a record-extending seventh AMA Pro American Superbike title if he maintains or builds on that gap by the end of the Tornado Nationals weekend.

Mladin's teammates Hayden and Blake Young (No. 79 Rockstar/Makita Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000) have been among the handful of riders that have challenged the American Superbike leader this year. Hayden is still winless in his American Superbike career but he has been on the podium in half of the year's 14 races. Hayden's best finishes have been seconds in the Saturday finals at Road Atlanta and Infineon Raceway and both rounds in March at Auto Club Speedway in California.

Young has overcome severe injuries to his left pinkie and ring finger in a Sunday final accident at Barber Motorsports Park to remain one of Mladin's strongest challengers. His best run of the year came two races ago in the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca where he led the most laps for the first time this season before finishing second to Mladin.

Although a solid sixth in the championship standings with 201 points despite missing a pair of races, Young has been eliminated from the title picture.

Yamaha's American Superbike riders Ben Bostrom (No. 2 Yamaha Motor Corp. USA Yamaha R1) and Josh Hayes (No. 4 Yamaha Motor Corp. USA Yamaha R1) rank third and fourth, respectively, heading to Topeka. Bostrom, who is third in the championship standings with 246 points, finished second to Hayes in Race 2 at Mid-Ohio as Yamaha scored a rare one-two American Superbike finish.

Hayes dominated the Mid-Ohio weekend after becoming the first rider other than Mladin this season to earn the top spot in Superpole qualifying on Friday. He then won both of the weekend's races and joins Mladin as 2009's only American Superbike repeat race winner with three victories. He heads to Heartland Park fourth in the championship with 245 points, just one behind teammate Bostrom.

The year's only other American Superbike race winner is Larry Pegram (No. 72 Foremost Insurance/Pegram Racing Ducati 1098R) who is fifth in the American Superbike standings with 223 points. Pegram out-raced Mladin and the rest of the field three races ago at Road America for his first win in 10 years.

Geoff May (No. 54 National Guard Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000) and his Jordan Motorsports teammate Aaron Yates (No. 23 Brand Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000) rank seventh and eighth, respectively, in the American Superbike standings. May's best finishes were three third-place showings within the year's first five races while Yates has posted back-to-back third-place showings of his own in Race 2 at Road America and at Laguna Seca. Yates has also given the Jordan team its top results of the year with second-place finishes in the Sunday final at Barber and one event ago at Mid-Ohio in Race 1 on Saturday.

A pair of top privateers completes the American Superbike top 10 but one will miss this weekend's race at Topeka and the rest of the season. David Anthony (No. 25 Aussie Dave Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000) remains 10th in the championship despite missing both Mid-Ohio races after a spill in Saturday's final qualifying. He is currently recovering from surgery to repair a fractured femur.

Taylor Knapp (No. 44 Taylor Knapp Racing Buell 1125RR) is ninth in the standings and his season has been anchored by eight top-10 finishes, including the Sunday final at Mid-Ohio. In that race Knapp debuted the Buell 1125RR and two more of the new machines will be on track at Topeka in the hands of veteran Buell rider Shawn Higbee (No. 11 Higbee-Racing.com Buell 1125RR) and Walt Sipp (No. 221 Walt Sipp Racing Buell 1125RR).

Honda has been competitive in American Superbike this year despite an early season injury to top rider Neil Hodgson (No. 100 Corona Extra Honda CBR1000RR). The former World Superbike Champion has recovered from an early-season motocross training injury to score strong sixth-place finishes in the recent races at Road America and Laguna Seca.

While Mladin and Rockstar/Makita Yoshimura have all but sealed the American Superbike championships, the title battle in AMA Pro Daytona SportBike is closer than it has been all season.

Danny Eslick (No. 9 GEICO Powersports/RMR Buell 1125R) muscled his way to a sweep of both races two weeks ago at Mid-Ohio and has moved to within just 10 points of mid-season terror Martin Cardenas (No. 36 Team M4 Suzuki GSX-R600). Cardenas has 285 points and six wins while Eslick has 275 markers and five wins to his credit.

Also firmly in the mix is Jamie Hacking (No. 88 Monster Energy Attack Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) who is far from out of it in third place with 241 championship points.

Bostrom has gone a perfect two for two in Daytona SportBike cameos on his No. 1s Graves Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6 and Canadian rider Chris Peris (No. 10 Erion Racing Honda CBR600RR) scored a race win at Road America.

Yamaha's fulltime Daytona SportBike riders are Josh Herrin (No. 8 Team Graves Yamaha YZF-R6) and Tommy Aquino (No. 6 Team Graves Yamaha YZF-R6). Herrin is fourth in the championship standings with 211 points and has finished third in two of the last six races. Aquino hit the podium for the first time this year at Mid-Ohio where he finished third, one spot behind Herrin, on Saturday.

Peris is teammates with veteran Honda rider Jake Zemke (No. 1x Erion Racing Honda CBR600RR) who also factored into Erion's strong Road America weekend with a season-high finish of second in the Sunday final. It was Zemke's first podium finish of the season but he also showed well at Mid-Ohio with his second fourth-place finish of the season on Saturday.

Cardenas partners with the equally quick Jason DiSalvo (No. 40 Team M4 Suzuki GSX-R600) who has five podium finishes and a series-leading four poles so far in 2009. DiSalvo rounds out the top five in the championship with 201 points.

Chaz Davies (No. 57 Factory Aprilia Millennium Technologies Team Aprilia RSV1000R) is the main Aprilia threat and scored a season-high finish of second two races ago at Laguna Seca. Steve Rapp (No. 48 Bazzaz/Pat Clark Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6) is another past Daytona 200 winner who is hitting his stride after taking his first podium of the year at Infineon with a third-place finish in the Saturday final.

Sunday's AMA Pro SuperSport sprint is the final combined East/West shootout of the season and is also the final points race of the year for riders contesting the SuperSport West championship but they will be racing head-to-head with a competitive crop of riders from the SuperSport East division.

Ricky Parker (No. 96 Team Graves Yamaha YZF-R6) leads the SuperSport West championship standings with 88 points despite missing the year's first pair of races. Parker is 14 points clear of nearest challenger Tyler Odom (No. 46 Erion Racing/Pro Honda Oils & Chemicals Honda CBR600RR), who won Daytona's season-opening dual division race and led the championship earlier in the year. Distant yet competitive threats for the West crown include Clint Shobert (No. 26 American Honda/Pro Honda Oils & Chemicals Honda CBR600RR) and Bryce Prince (No. 74 Clawson Motorsports/Arai/NJK Leathers/Cycle Gear Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R).

The SuperSport East division will also see its best riders battle for the overall win and their own division points at Topeka. Riders expected to be running at the front include Mid-Ohio winner and new SuperSport East points leader Josh Day (No. 4 Kerker Racing Yamaha YZF-R6), two-time race winner Leandro Mercado (No. 92 Monster Energy Attack Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R), Barber SuperSport winner Garrett Carter (No. 31 Ridersdiscount.com/Woodcraft Yamaha YZF-R6, Russ Wikle (No. 5 Roadracingworld.com Suzuki GSX-R600) and Huntley Nash (No. 15 LTD Racing Yamaha YZF-R6).

The AMA Pro SunTrust Moto-GT division makes a repeat visit to Topeka after paving the way for AMA Pro Road Racing's return to Heartland Park last August.

Despite being one of just two winless teams in the top six, the No. 41 Liberty Waves Racing Buell 1125R of Eric Pinson and Eric Haugo leads the GT1 championship heading to Topeka. In the GT2 class, championship leaders Frank Shockley and Ryan Elleby made history two races ago at Road America when they finished first overall on the No. 77 Touring Sport Ducshop Ducati PS1000LE. It was the first time a GT2 class bike beat the faster GT1 class machines and Heartland Park could be the type of track where a similar upset could take place.

The action begins with practice, qualifying and Superpole qualifying on Friday, July 31, and continues straight into the weekend with three races each day on Saturday and Sunday. The SunTrust Moto-GT enduro kicks off the weekend's races at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, and will be followed that afternoon by the first finals for American Superbike at 3 p.m. and Daytona SportBike at 4 p.m. Sunday will see Daytona SportBike roll off first at 2 p.m., SuperSport following at 3 p.m. and Superbike closing the weekend at 4 p.m. The Superbike and Daytona SportBike races are each 20 laps for 50 miles while the SuperSport race is a 16-lap distance for 40 miles.

The Tornado Nationals will be featured in a pair of same-day telecasts on SPEED. Saturday's American Superbike and Daytona SportBike finals will be shown that night in a two-hour show at 10:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. PT) while Sunday's premier class races and other highlights will air in a two-hour show that evening at Midnight ET (9 p.m. PT).

Xaus aims for quick comeback

From BMW Motorrad Motorsport

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider Ruben Xaus underwent a successful operation on his right femur at the Centro Medico Teknon hospital in Barcelona on Tuesday and is already looking forward to starting his physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

The operation was carried out by surgeons Dr. Miquel Llobet and Dr. Miguel Sales and involved the insertion of three screws into the femur and went as smoothly as possible.

Xaus was discharged from hospital on Wednesday and will begin his physiotherapy at a sports clinic and rehabilitation centre not far from Playa de Aro, north of Barcelona.

"Everything has worked so efficiently," Xaus said. "I want to thank Miquel Llobet and Miguel Sales for doing a great job and all the medical team for looking after me so well. I am going to stay in an apartment in Playa de Aro, near the beach, but also because it is very close to where I will be doing my physiotherapy and rehabilitation. At the moment I am on crutches, because I am not allowed to put any weight on my right leg, but I can sit down normally and get about OK. I can start swimming almost straightway and physiotherapy very soon. I am in no pain and I am really looking forward to getting fit and back on my bike again.

"At Brno, our bike was working so well and it was easy to ride, so it was a big shame I crashed. I think the reason I hurt myself was because the gravel had not been raked over and the recent rain had made some of the ridges as hard as concrete. Hitting one of those was what did the damage, otherwise I would’ve just walked away from the crash without a problem.

"It’s good that we have a bit of a break before the next race, but I’m already looking forward to being back at the track. I want to say thank you to the whole team for all their good wishes and tell them to have a good holiday and then get my bikes ready for my return."

Taylor dominates Leamington

From Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada

LEAMINGTON, ON – On an overcast day with the Leamington Fairgrounds half-mile track in excellent condition, Deeley Harley-Davidson/ Clare's Harley-Davidson of Niagara-sponsored Donald Taylor totally dominated the first long track event on the Canadian Motorcycle Association 2009 flat track schedule.

“I had a kind of rough start,” the five-time National Champion explained. “Both Jon Cornwell and John Parker beat me off the line but I ran them down on the back straight and passed them both in [turns] three and four. I knew once I got by them I’d be gone. The Harley-Davidson XR750 was running so strong and we had the set up perfect. I honestly don’t remember being so comfortable and confident in a race, I didn’t even raise a sweat.”

By the time the halfway flags were shown Taylor was already beginning to lap slower riders and his torrid race pace had him lapping over half of the 18-rider field. Those same lapped riders also caused some problems for the speedy champ.

“In the final four laps I was passing a lot of guys and they were all over the place using different lines that always seemed to conflict with mine. I had a really close call with a straw bale right on the track and I don’t know how I didn’t crash,” he admitted.

Post race Taylor was jubilant stating, “That was a blast. This thing (his HD XR750) is an absolute rocket, it worked so well and just went where I wanted it to, it was perfect.

"This was a perfect tune up for Hagerstown, MD next weekend. I feel pretty confident I can do well down there and qualify for the show again.”

This performance in Leamington has put Taylor in a good stead towards what he hopes will be his sixth consecutive Canadian Dirt Track Championship and accompanying number one plate. His existing score of five plates in a row has already established a Canadian record.

The 2010 CVO Softail Convertible is designed to be a “two-in-one” touring-and-cruising motorcycle. It features a new compact fairing, leather saddlebags, a passenger pillion, and upright with backrest that are each quickly detachable.

The ultimate hot rod bagger from Harley-Davidson, the CVO Street Glide features new 18-inch front and rear “Agitator” contrast chrome wheels, hydraulic rear shocks with adjustable preload, a low-profile custom seat with matching passenger backrest, and a lowered-and-trimmed front fender.

New full-depth extended saddlebags are flanked with filler strips incorporating LED stop/tail/turn lighting.

Two CVO models are reprised for 2010 with new paint and features.

The 2010 CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide features a new flamed paint scheme, new LED saddlebag lights, and LED King Tour-Pak brake/tail light. The seat and backrest have a new perforated leather insert. The backrest also now features adjustable lumbar support. New dimpled trim items and medallions are also included.

Wide and muscular, the 2010 CVO Fat Bob debuts an exclusive new plating process called Midnight Pearl that is featured on the headlight shell, timer and derby covers, fender strut covers, and other components. An all-new paint scheme is offered in three colour combinations.

Each 2010 CVO model is powered by the fuel-injected Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110TM V-Twin engine, the largest-displacement engine produced by Harley-Davidson, rated at up to 115 ft-lb of torque. This engine is only available from the Factory in CVO models.

Harley-Davidson CVO motorcycles are produced in limited numbers by a team of highly skilled technicians in a special assembly area at the Harley-Davidson production facilities in Kansas City, MO, and York, PA.

CVO models are customized using existing components from the Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories catalogue, and with many all-new custom parts that are exclusive to CVO models. The CVO program is often used to introduce new custom components and techniques before they are offered as individual accessories. Harley-Davidson CVO motorcycles are backed by a two-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

Winnipeg racer claims Grand National title

From the American Motorcyclist Association

PICKERINGTON, OH -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports that Shock Doctor/KTM's Cory Buttrick took home the top off-road honours at the inaugural AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships, which took place July 24-26 as part of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days in Lexington, OH, while Paul Germain emerged as the weekend's top track-racing competitor.

Buttrick, from Logan, OH, was crowned the AMA Off-Road Vintage Grand National Champion, while Germain, from Winnipeg, earned the AMA Track Racing Vintage Grand National Championship.

The weekend of competition ushered in a new era of national recognition for vintage competitors. In addition to recognizing the AMA Vintage Grand National Champions, national championships were decided in trials, vintage motocross and hare scrambles, post-vintage motocross and hare scrambles, dirt track, and road racing.

There were only two AMA Vintage Grand National Champions, however. To capture these unique awards, Buttrick and Germain demonstrated not just speed but consistency and versatility across multiple disciplines.

The 59-year-old Germain, who was the 1975 360cc Canadian Dirt Track National Champion, raced his way to the AMA Track Racing Vintage Grand National Championship with the 250 Grand Prix road racing title as well as a consistent showing in dirt track.

Germain said that the vintage title had special meaning to him because of his past history in dirt-track competition, where the top riders battle for the AMA Grand National Championship.

"I had my AMA license and ran AMA races, but I spent too much time in Canada to really excel down here, but for sure, an (AMA Grand National Championship) was always my dream," Germain said. "When I saw the posting for this Grand National format for this year, I said, 'This is it! I'm going down there, and I'm doing it.'"

Germain added that he's definitely coming back next year to defend his title.

"The crosshairs are already lining up on us," Germain said. "I'm sure everybody figures it was too easy for those guys, so let's go get 'em. So, we've got to come back and show them what it's all about."

Germain raced his 1968 Yamaha in two classes, finishing third and first in 250 Grand Prix and earning two second-place finishes in 350 Grand Prix. In dirt track, Germain finished 10th in 501cc-Open Singles on a 1979 Yamaha 560 and fifth in 501cc-Open Twins on a 1972 Yamaha 750.

The 18-year-old Buttrick, who is currently second in points in the XC2 Pro Lites class in the Grand National Cross Country series, combined dominant performances in hare scrambles and motocross with a solid effort in trials to claim the AMA Off-Road Racing Vintage Grand National Championships.

Dovizioso takes dramatic MotoGP win

From motogp.com

Andrea Dovizioso closed the MotoGP stay at Donington Park with a first ever premier class victory, coming out on top in what became a ‘semi flag-to-flag’ race on Sunday.

The Repsol Honda rider made sense of the madness that ensued with steady rainfall to earn 25 points and the honour of being the last premier class winner at the Midlands circuit.

The race was one of the most unpredictable of recent years, with twists and turns every step of the way. Besides the maiden triumph there were falls for the top two in the World Championship, a disastrous pre-race decision from a title contender and riders holding on instead of coming in for a bike change.

Dovizioso had been in the chasing group on the opening laps, but was thrust up to the front courtesy of his superior pace and mistakes from his rivals. After battling with World Championship leader Valentino Rossi at the head of the field, the young Italian found himself alone out in front as the more experienced Rossi fell at the Fogarty Esses with 11 laps remaining.

A maiden win in the premier class could not have come at a better time for the Italian. Following three races without claiming World Championship points, a month in which speculation about his future has been debated and some tough times chasing a first podium as a Repsol Honda rider, the sophomore star gave an assured display when some of the more experienced names in MotoGP fell foul of the Donington Park conditions.

“This race was very difficult. With these conditions the temperature of the tires was too low, and the light rainfall for the whole race meant that it was probably the worst scenario for riding on this tire. We couldn’t change the bikes either, so it was really difficult to manage,” said the Honda factory rider after an ecstatic celebration on the podium.

“Before Valentino crashed it was easy, because I just followed him; after that I needed to understand the track better. Wearing a light visor also meant that I couldn’t see clearly which lines were the driest.”

Also benefitting from consistency were podium finishers Colin Edwards and Randy de Puniet, who engaged in an entertaining battle as the chequered flag came closer to being waved.

Monster Tech 3 Yamaha man Edwards took second from the LCR Honda rider on the final hairpin, ending the race just under 1.5 seconds behind Dovizioso. For both riders the top three result was their first podium of the 2009 season.

Edwards has seen all kinds of conditions in his long history of racing, but ranks the 2009 British Grand Prix as one of the hardest situations that he has had to manage. He overtook de Puniet on the final corner of the race after a slow start from sixth on the grid.

“I wouldn’t wish that kind of race on anybody. Have I raced in tougher conditions? Maybe… only when there has been oil on the track or something like that,” said Edwards after his first podium of the 2009 season. "We put a front tire on that we hadn’t run all weekend and I was just feeling out the conditions. Then everyone just left! I was thinking ‘why are you all in such a hurry?’

"Everything seemed to be OK and I was feeling stable, so I just started to push more and saw that I was passing guys pretty quickly. I though that either I was going way too fast for the conditions or they were all freaking out. I think I judged the conditions alright.”

The early going saw uncertainty and instability as rain fell upon the lights going off. Early leader Jorge Lorenzo had been talked out of running wet tires and took the lead after just a handful of laps, but took a fall when he clipped a slippery rumble strip and was unable to restart his Yamaha M1.

The crash had been foreshadowed by a tumble for Toni Elías, the leader of lap 1 and a faller at the same spot on lap 7.

With eight laps remaining the first riders came in to change machines, but it was too late for the switch to make an impact. Alex de Angelis placed fourth, ahead of the remounted Rossi and home rider James Toseland – with whom he dueled on the last lap.

Rossi now leads the World Championship by 25 points from Lorenzo.

The Ducati Marlboro team of Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden were the only riders to go with full wet tires on the grid, although a lack of heavy rainfall and the durability of Bridgestone’s dry tire meant that they were immediately off the pace. The duo were lapped by the leaders two laps before the halfway point of the race, their gamble definitively failing to pay off.

The decision to run wet tires appeared to make some degree of sense - Stoner had topped the wet morning warmup session and Hayden had been in good form - although in practice the track was not sufficiently sodden for the move.

"Everybody knows I’ve been struggling for the last few races in the dry so I was praying for the rain to come today,” said Stoner after the race. “Every single lap we were out there it threatened to pour down and we were very close to having the perfect situation. Unfortunately, even though it got heavier, it didn’t come soon enough and our tires were destroyed so it ended up being the wrong decision.

“For us, in our current situation, I still think it was a risk worth taking because it could have worked out fantastically but obviously we’re disappointed it didn’t,” he added, sticking by the choice.

Fifteenth-placed Hayden had less to lose than his teammate, with no title challenge on which to focus. He was slightly less convinced as to whether to run the wet tire risk, but in the end made the final call – despite having been informed that every other rider on the grid would be on slicks.

“We agreed on it together with the team but it was my shout, I thought ‘let’s try and be a hero here!’ The tire was pretty much destroyed after seven or eight laps but there was no point coming in to pit and it came apart five laps from the end. To be honest it’s amazing how it held together for that long! I don’t want to say it was a mistake; it was just a gamble that didn’t pay off and we’ll learn from it,” lamented the American.

The brave decision had come after the initial sighting lap, during which both riders had expressed concerns over a lack of grip.

Hiroshi Aoyama came out on top in the 250cc battle of Britain, as Donington Park dried out and gave a headache for the title contenders.

The tire choice for the start of the British Grand Prix was in no doubt: the declaration of a wet race meant that the softer and cut tires would be the rubber for the opening laps. Before the halfway mark, however, the asphalt had dried, leaving a big decision as to whether to come in, miss a lap and attempt to recover time on slick tires, or risk a slip-up on the notoriously treacherous Midlands track.

Aoyama had a pair of near-misses, but managed the degradation of his Dunlops to perfection as none of the big guns elected to make a switch. Backmarkers and riders attempting to unlap themselves came into play, but Aoyama remained cool to add to his win total and World Championship lead.

Title rival Álvaro Bautista reduced a seven-second lead to just three with a handful of laps remaining, but remained out of touching distance as he encountered a hoard of riders on dry weather tires. The Mapfre Aspar rider had started from fourth on the grid, his first time off the front row in 2009.

Aoyama now leads Bautista by 15 points in the overall classification.

Julián Simón emerged victorious in a five-lap sprint for glory in the final 125cc World Championship race at Donington Park. Rainfall 11 laps from the scheduled end of the 25-lap showdown closed back up the field and created a thrilling finale to the British Grand Prix, won by the series leader.

The triumph was the Aspar Team’s 100th, the day after they announced their move up to MotoGP for 2010. More importantly for Simón, it was his third of the 2009 season.

Rocky Mountain High

My absence can be explained yet again by storm duty. I've just recently returned from a tour of storm duty, handling tornado and hail claims from Colorado. Within about one months period of time there have been over 9 significant storms. Several of which had tornados and all that produced hail. It seems ironic to be sitting in your vehicle writing up a hail damage estimate for someone's home or auto while it is hailing at that very moment. It's happened to me once. I've also been on an auto "drive in" assignment once where as we were driving to the drive in location it hailed on the vehicle we were driving three different times.

This time handling hail claims in Colorado there was a tornado one night within a neighboring city to where I was staying at. It too produced lots of damaging winds and hail. This is crazy shit. I'm glad to be home. I only hope I can stay here. Hopefully they won't need me again for awhile. Maybe I can actually get caught up on some of your blogs.

Anyway, I didn't have much time to really get out and see the sights so much, which really bums me out, because it is such a beautiful place. While on storm duty you work a minimum 12 hour day. This leaves no time for anything else but to eat, sleep and shit. Sometimes you feel like all you do is eat, sleep and shit hail. The Rockies are truly breathtaking. At times while driving along from one home to the next, I'd get beautiful glimpses, but no place to really take the photos that would do the Rockies justice, because, well, work got in the way and so did the other moving cars flying by on the freeways.

I got one shitty picture while driving. That's it. Oh, and my camera's zoom sucks, especially while driving down the freeway.

I did get an interesting set of photos that I thought I'd share.

Nice trailer huh?. See anything interesting?
(I altered the picture so you don't really see.)
Yup, That is a mighty big trailer for a motorcycle.
Another angle to show you that the bike is truly pulling that thing.

Oh wait is that actually a Fido in that trailer????? WTF! I thought it was kind of cool, and yet at the same time, kind of cruel. I got mixed feelings on this one. Keeping in mind it was in the middle to upper 90's. Although at the same time as much as I love to ride, and as much as I love my dog, and he loves me, It would be nice to take him with me sometimes.

Ain't he cute?

Infront reacts to MotoGP rumours

By John Hopkins

World Superbike Championship organizer Infront Motor Sports reacted to allegations that MotoGP World Championship might be investigating the inclusion of bikes with 1000cc production-based engines with a very blunt statement issued at the World Superbike round at Brno in the Czech Republic on Sunday.

"Infront Motor Sports does not consider a similar idea either to be realistic or feasible in view of the existing contracts between the FIM and Infront Motor Sports itself and in view of the specific characteristics of the World Superbike and MotoGP championships," Infront said in the press statement. "We believe therefore that such a project will not have any follow-up.

"Nevertheless, wherever future developments should render necessary any action of defense of the rights of Infront Motor Sports, as well as those of all the teams, manufacturers, riders, sponsors and media who have invested in the Superbike and Supersport World Championships, such action will be immediately set in motion at all levels."

Biaggi and Spies win at Brno

Story and photo from the World Superbike Championship

Max Biaggi (Aprilia) and Ben Spies (Yamaha) scored a win apiece in round 10 of the Hannspree FIM Superbike World Championship at Brno in front of record 75,000 crowd on Sunday.

In race 1 the 25 points went to Biaggi after Spies had been wiped out by Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox), giving Aprilia its first win in its return season to WSB.

The second race saw Spies take a deserved victory, after the American managed to hold off Biaggi in the final stages (pictured). Fabrizio finished third, while points leader Noriyuki Haga, still not in the best of physical condition, limited the damage and managed to hold on to his championship lead by seven points.

Biaggi scored his first win of the season and his first win since Vallelunga 2007 in the opening race. It was also Aprilia's first win in the category since Régis Laconi's victory at Imola in 2001.

"When I crossed the start-finish I was so happy to be winning this race and I had so many flashbacks of Brno, I can feel that it is one of my favourite circuits," Biaggi said. "Of course I don't want to take anything away from Spies and Fabrizio, they were both very fast, but I remember Barry Sheene used to say 'To finish first, first you have to finish' and this is a part of the deal. I put my head down and did not make any mistake, so a big thanks to all my crew, Aprilia and in particular Gigi Dall'Igna, the 'papa' of our bike."

Second and third went to the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda duo of Carlos Checa and Jonathan Rea.

"It's a good result for the team to get two riders on the podium and I think we did a very good job," Checa said. "At a certain point I thought maybe I could catch Max, but in the end I had to preserve my tires as the right side in particular was not so good, and I could see there was no way. I settled for second as I could see that Johnny was four seconds behind."

Biaggi actually had a lonely run to the chequered flag after the other two favourites Spies and Fabrizio were eliminated when the Italian crashed in a fast left-hander, taking down his American rival with him.

Shane Byrne (Sterilgarda Ducati) got another good result for the Italian team in fourth.

It was a great day also for the other new manufacturer to the series, BMW, who had the satisfaction of seeing Troy Corser lead the opening two laps, the Australian eventually finishing fifth to score the team's best result this season.

It wasn't all good news for BMW however as Ruben Xaus crashed out on the opening lap, fracturing the femur bone in his right leg in the process.

Sixth place went to Czech rider Jakub Smrz (Guandakini Ducati), who recovered well to score a good result in front of his home crowd. Seventh was Leon Haslam (Stiggy Racing Honda) and eighth Haga (Ducati Xerox), who ran a defensive race to try and score as many points as possible.

Makoto Tamada took home a good result for Kawasaki, the Japanese rider finishing in 10th place.

Spies powered into the lead shortly after the start of race 2 to head towards his 11th win of the season. It wasn't easy however as the Texan had to keep Biaggi at bay, and the Italian took second at the end.

"It was a tough race," Spies said. "Fabrizio was there and I had to push and make good lap times. When I saw Max was there, he arrived quite quick and I had to start braking very late and stopping almost in the middle of the corner to get good drive so he couldn't come by me.

"The first race obviously wasn't so good but we rallied together for the second race. That pass attempt was not the best move in the world, but that's how racing goes sometimes. A big thanks also to the Clinica Mobile guys because I wasn't feeling so good this weekend."

Third went to Fabrizio, who lost contact with the leading pair in the last few laps.

Despite his win, Spies was unable to overtake Haga at the top of the table. The Japanese rider ran a heroic second race to finish in sixth place, holding off a trio of Tom Sykes (Yamaha), Byrne and Smrz in the final stages.

Just off the podium were the Ten Kate pairing of Rea and Checa, their positions inverted from race 1.

Once again Corser was up at the front in the early stages, but this time the Australian finished in 10th.

There was a sensational end to the Supersport race as Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha World Supersport) had to retire with a mechanical problem two laps from the flag as he was heading for another dominant victory, thus re-opening the title battle.

His closest rival Eugene Laverty (Parkalgar Honda) had been struggling all weekend and could only finish fifth.

The win, after the four-way battle for second turned into the fight for first, went to his team-mate Fabien Foret, who returned to the top slot for the first time since last year, the Frenchman thus wiping out all memories of his nasty crash here on this track 12 months ago.

In the sprint finish, the runner-up slot went to Anthony West (Stiggy Racing Honda), who managed to get the better of the two increasingly competitive Kawasakis of Joan Lascorz and Katsuaki Fujiwara.

The Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team again had a disappointing day, their two champions Kenan Sofuoglu and Andrew Pitt only finishing ninth and 10th respectively.

The Superstock 1000 FIM Cup round produced a real thriller. After leading for almost the entire race, Maxime Berger (Ten Kate Honda) crashed two turns from the chequered flag, throwing away a certain victory.

The man who raised the winners' champagne was Belgium's Xavier Simeon (Ducati Xerox), who took his second win in a row and has now increased his overall points lead to 26 over Claudio Corti (Suzuki Alstare). The Italian could only finish sixth, because of vibration problems on his Suzuki right from the start.

The outcome of the Superstock 600 race was decided on the last lap, with a seven-rider sprint to the chequered flag. In the end the win went to Belgium's Vincent Lonbois (MTM Racing Yamaha), who held off points leader Danilo Petrucci (Yamaha Trasimeno).

Martinez makes MotoGP move

From motogp.com

Jorge 'Aspar' Martínez will finally move his World Championship project up to MotoGP in 2010, courtesy of a deal with Ducati confirmed on Saturday at Donington Park.

After three years of negotiating with various factories, an agreement has been struck for an ambitious stay in the premier class.

“It seems that after three years we are finally able to achieve our dream of presenting a MotoGP project. It’s been three years of fighting and looking for the best option and, after sounding out various factories, we have finally reached an agreement with Ducati,” declared 'Aspar' at the British track. “I hope that this will be a fruitful arrangement that will continue in the long term. In theory we will have one rider in 2010, with the idea being to expand to two in 2011.”

The Aspar Team will be present in all three categories of the World Championship, with the MotoGP team joining 125cc and Moto2 squads.

“Our goal is primarily to grow strong in MotoGP from a technical viewpoint. We will continue with the 125cc team and compete in the Moto2 class, so we feel that this is a big step for the whole team. Today the big news is that we are moving up to MotoGP with Ducati, so the second thing that we have to do is confirm a rider. We hope to be able to do this by the time we get to Brno,” added the former three-time lower cylinder category World Champion, who was clear on his preferred choice for the available spot.

"It would be great to convince Álvaro Bautista to come up with us and he is our first option for the MotoGP team. He has been with us for a long time, winning a 125cc World Championship and finishing second in 250cc, so it would be great for him to continue with us,” he stated, referring to the rider currently involved in the 250cc title fight.
