Archambault crowned at AMP

By John Hopkins

SHUBENACADIE, NS – Raphael Archambault became the first rider to claim a 2010 national road racing title when he locked up the Amateur Sport Bike Championship in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship by qualifying on pole for this weekend’s races at Atlantic Motorsport Park on Friday.

The St-Colomban, Que. rider took his Archambault Racing / Centre Hamel Honda CBR600RR around the AMP track in 1:10.710 to pick up four points and extend his lead over Jeremie Hade Precourt to 106 points in the class standings.

Hade Precourt, from Granby, Que. was fourth fastest riding the JHP Racing / Picotte Performance Suzuki GSX-R600.

"The races can just be for fun now," said Archambault, who like Jordan Szoke in Superbike and Pro Sport Bike is trying to complete a perfect season with seven wins from seven races. "Now I can go for a perfect season. I just need to get a good race pace.

"We are still working on the set-up. Here it's hard because you can make a change that will work on the first half of the lap but it is not good for the second part of the lap. I still have some work to do myself too."

Local ace Charlie Legere of Kinsac, N.S. qualified second fastest with a time of 1:11.464 on the Walter Chappell Well Drilling Honda CBR600RR and Phillipe Masse was third aboard his Kawasaki ZX-6R at 1:11.838.

Frankville, N.S.'s Bobby Baldwin leads off row two on his Suzuki GSX-R600 with Hamilton, Ont. racers Lee Kuhn (Triumph 675 Daytona) and Steven Nickerson (Honda CBR600RR) alongside.

Falmouth, N.S. racer Austin Shaw-O’Leary claimed pole position for this weekend’s Honda CBR125R Challenge races with a time of 1:30.189. Points leader Ryan Appenrodt of Quesnel, B.C. will start sixth and his closest title challenger, Laval, Que.’s Loic Viscasillas lines up ninth.

Appenrodt leads Viscasillas by 57 points in the standings, 360-303.

Olivier Spilborghs of White Rock, B.C. closed the gap to points leader Rob Busby by claiming pole in the K&N Filters’ Sport Twins class on his Buell XB9R. Spilborghs recorded a 1:12.899 while Busby had to settle for a 1:13.052 on his Buell XB12R.

The Brantford, Ont. rider now leads Spilborghs by 66 points, 259-193.

Archambault was also quickest in qualifying for the Pro Cycle ARL Amateur Superbike race with a 1:10.911 on his Honda. Legere was again next best with a time of 1:11.304 aboard his CBR600RR.
