Motorcycle Industry hit by Credit Crunch

Yesterday the Motor Cycle Industry Association Press Office put out a press release highlighting the dramatic fall off in powered two wheeler sales in February for the UK, down a massive 25% from February 2008.

The motor cycle industry is now asking the UK government for help! It is asking the government to suspend vehicle excise duty (VED or road tax) and the first registration fee on all new mopeds, scooters and motorcycles for a minimum of one year to support the market and recognise the green advantages of motorcycling.

I wonder after all they have spent out supporting the banks and car industry, if the government will hear the plea or even have the money?

All of us the motorcycle industry have to hope so!!! Up to 15000 UK jobs and £3 billion annual turover depend on it.

Ride safe.

2008 UK Motorcycle sales only down 3.4%

The Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) have just released the figures which show that total motorcycle registrations only fell by 3.4% over 2007. This is fantastic news given the credit crunch and current economic conditions.

139,715 motorcycles, mopeds and scooters were registered in 2008, only 4,866 registrations down on 2007.

Ride safe.

UK Motorcycle Registrations dip!

Figures released yesterday by the Motor Cycle Industry Association reveal that motorcycle registrations were down 16% for November, compared to November 2007. 7,517 mopeds, scooters and motorcycles were registered in November, compared with 8,947 in the same month last year.

However for the 11 months of this year are just 2.4% down with 133,099 powered two wheelers registered.

Not unsurprisingly the biggest seller in November was Yamaha's XC 125 scooter and in 2007, 45 per cent of the 146,000 machines registered for the first time, had engine capacities of up to 150cc.

Motorcycling at last appears to be increasing the Department for Transport released figures last week that show the number of people taking the motorcycling test increased to 88,000 in 2007/08, the highest number since 2000/01.

So the motorcycle industry appears to be holding up well in this credit crunch, as it appears people turn to low capacity powered two wheelers.

Ride safe.

Motorcycle sales up a massive 22%

The Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) has just released the sales figures for July and the sale of powered two-wheelers has jumped 22%.

That's fantastic news for us all involved in motorcycling, it finally seems that motorcycling might be seeing a resurgence in the UK. Apparently growth is in the practical, multi-use every day bikes, with scooter and moped sales up 27% and naked bikes up a massive 46.5%.

Now obviously some of this must be down to people rushing to pass their tests before the new test regime comes in, but nevertheless it's a welcome spurt of growth.

Ride safe.

Motor Scooters -- Are You Ready for One?

Almost every day, I'm seeing more and more articles about the advantages of owning a motor scooter in a world of ever increasing gas prices.

Here's an excerpt from an article, Born to Be ... Fuel-Efficient, by Jonathan Welsh of the Wall Street Journal that sums up the current economic thinking about motor scooters:

"Chris Casal, a Brooklyn, N.Y., elementary-school teacher, used to drive to work almost every day, mainly because it took 12 minutes compared with an hour by subway. But rising fuel and parking costs made the trip 'kind of ridiculous,' he says. So last year he bought a Vespa GTS scooter that uses about $7 of fuel every two weeks instead of the $30 his Honda Civic consumed. He parks free in the schoolyard, and the two-wheeler impresses his students."

Of course, there are other considerations beyond the price of gas. There's the need to learn how to be safe while riding a motor scooter. Motorcycles are very hard to see as it is and motor scooters are even smaller visual targets for the average motorist.

The average non-motorcyclist has a lot to learn about riding on two wheels. I remember all the scooter accidents I saw while in Bermuda by newbie riders. I think I got a one-minute lesson before I rented my scooter.

I've just revised my article, Motor Scooters - Have Fun While Saving Gas, that summarizes all my motor scooter resources that may assist in introducing motor scooters to the masses.

Don't put your life on the line by getting a motor scooter without proper training and wearing apparel.

Have fun and save gas if you get a motor scooter but remember to first BE SAFE.
