Nelson scores 600 win

SHUBENACADIE, NS -- Andrew Nelson (Nelson Racing Yamaha YZF-R6) scored his first Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike win of the season while Szoke took a major step toward clinching his third straight class title at Atlantic Motorsport Park on Saturday.

Nelson, from Kars, ON, took the lead when Calgary's Chris Peris (Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Racing Suzuki GSX-R600) crashed on lap 11 of the 18-lap race and beat Szoke (Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-6R) by 2.387 secs.

Szoke extended his championship lead to 66 points over Granby, QC's Kevin Lacombe, who crashed his Team Toyota Yamaha / Fast Company Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 out of second place on lap nine.

Saskatoon's Brett McCormick (Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-6R) finished third.

Valter Bartolini of Bologna, Italy extended his lead in the Canadian Thunder class with a convincing victory on his NCR-Ducati 848. Bartolini finished 9.748 secs. ahead of the KTM Canada KTM Super Duke R 990 of Beaconsfield, QC’s Michael Leon, with Michael Ferreira of Kitchener, ON third on a BMW Motorrad Canada BMW HP2 Sport.

Bartolini’s teammate Nelson was second in points going into the race but dropped out with mechanical troubles, allowing fourth place finisher Dave Estok (Deeley Harey-Davidson Canada / Ruthless Racing Buell 1125R) to move into second with 169. Bartolini leads with 212.

Ottawa’s Jim Proulx moved a step closer to the Canadian Sport Twins title with his fourth win of the year on his Buell XB12R. He now has 264 points to the 203 of A. J. Simiana of Bowmanville, ON, who placed fourth on his Ducati S2R / Sport Classic.

Patrick Marques took his first career win in the Armour Bodies Amateur 600 Sport Bike Championship. Riding a Suzuki GSX-R600, the Calgary racer edged the Yamaha YZF-R6 of Keene, ON’s Jodi Christie by 0.143 secs. Christie now leads Marques by 35 points in the standings, 200-165, with two events remaining.

Falmouth, NS rider Jeff O’Leary completed the podium on a Kawasaki ZX-6R after battling with Marques and Christie most of the way.

Cochrane, AB’s Cody Matechuk closed to within 12 points of the lead of the Suzuki SV650 National Cup standings with his third win of the year. The 15-year-old now has 227 points to the 239 of class leader John Jarvie of Burlington, ON, who finished second on Saturday.

Raphael Archambault of St-Colomban, QC remained unbeaten in the Honda CBR125R Challenge.

All classes will be back in action Sunday for the second half of the doubleheader weekend.
