Archambault still unbeaten

By John Hopkins

BOWMANVILLE, ON-- Raphael Archambault of St-Colomban, QC came within three points of clinching the Amateur Sport Bike title in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship after scoring his fifth straight win of the season at Mosport on Sunday.

The rider of the Archambault Racing / Centre Hamel Honda-backed Honda CBR600RR finished 0.740 secs. ahead of the ProStar Motorsports-supported Suzuki GSX-R600 of Burlington, ON’s Jody Greening. St-Dominique, QC’s Philippe Masse was third on the FC51 Custom.com / Pete’s Superbike.com Kawasaki ZX-6R.

As on Saturday Hamilton, ON's Steven Nickerson was in the thick of the lead battle and crossed the line in second. But the STN Racing / DeWildt Honda Powerhouse CBR600RR rider was penalized five seconds for a jump start and dropped to fifth in the results.

"I didn't know he [Nickerson] had jumped," Archambault admitted. "So I tried to keep in front. He had a better exit from turn 5B [onto the back straight] and every lap he was beside me. And I braked later and later at the end of the back straight."

The jump start to Nickerson actually prevented Archambault from celebrating the Amateur Sport Bike title, as the jump start penalty moved Jeremie Hade Precourt up to fourth in the results, earning him three more points and keeping him mathematically within striking distance of Archambault heading into the season ending doubleheader at Atlantic Motorsport Park Aug. 6-8.

Archambault now has 265 points to the 260 of Hade Precourt with 108 points available in Nova Scotia.

For most of the race seven bikes made up the lead fight, although Archambault led all 12 laps. Three laps from the end Archambault, Nickerson and Greening broke free of the group and crossed the line in that order.

Greening had qualified second but had to work his way up from a poor start to challenge for the win.

"I was quite surprised I was able to catch up as quickly as I did," he said. "Those little kids are hard to catch. I made sure out of Moss's [turn five] I grabbed on to the lead draft and I was strong through eight and nine. Thinking back now, I probably should have pushed harder for the win."

Masse passed Hade Precourt on the final lap for what turned into third place, equalling his best finish of the season. And for the second time this year the Amateur Sport Bike podium was filled with Suzuki SV Cup graduates.

Bodhi Edie and Marcel Irnie were also part of the lead fight but were involved in a collision two laps from the end. Irnie crossed the line in seventh and Edie 11th, but Irnie was later suspended from series competition for one year as a result of the incident. He had been placed on probation at the previous round in Calgary.

Aubrey Bailey of Parry Sound, ON continued his consistent year with a season high sixth on his Suzuki GSX-R600.

Robert Busby of Brantford, ON completed a weekend sweep of the K&N Filters Sport Twins class on his Buell XB12 and the Brantford, ON rider takes a 67-point series lead to the final weekend.

Olivier Spilborghs took second on a Buell XB9 and the White Rock, B.C. racer retains second in the standings. Unlike on Saturday, however, he was not close to Busby at the end, finishing 6.869 secs. behind.

Dan Henri of Ottawa completed the podium on his Suzuki SV650 after Kawasaki rider Laurent Feuiltault was penalized for a jump start and dropped to fourth.

Ryan Appenrodt of Quesnel, BC extended his lead in the Honda CBR125R Challenge to 35 points with his sixth win in seven races this year. In another wild finish the top seven crossed the line separated by only 1.588 secs. after the eight-lap race.

Loic Viscasillas of Laval, QC picked up his fourth runner-up finish of the season and retained second in the point standings, while Ste-Catharine, QC's Cedric Martineau grabbed a season high third in the scramble to the line.
