2011 Harley-Davidson Blackline Softail
“Lean as wire, hard as iron, and dark as a tar road at midnight,” is how H-D describes what is essentially just a variation of the high-end Softail series, but the Blackline has several notable features that grabbed our attention when we saw it at its New York City media reveal last week.
The Blackline brings in a new “Black Denim” powerdercoating for its frame and swingarm, laced aluminum wheels with black-anodized rims, a fresh FX front end topped with a new “Split Drag” handlebars mounted directly to a thin upper triple clamp powdercoated black.

Harley-Davidson’s new Blackline was introduced to the world’s media in the SoHo district of New York City.
Inspiration for the Blackline came from H-D Senior Industrial Designer/Stylist, Casey Ketterhagen, who emphasizes the importance of the bike’s proportions, wanting it to look like “a person just riding a motor.”
2011 Harley-Davidson Softail Blackline
The Softail’s typical tank-top gauge panel is replaced by a gloss-black die-cast trim panel that conceals the fuel pump hardware. A new multi-function gauge is set at the base of the narrow “Split Drag” handlebar.
To that end, graphics are subtle (with no raised badges), chrome is minimal (black is the main accent), and slenderness is emphasized. A Softail’s 5-gallon fuel tank is stripped of its tank-top instrument console to lower its profile and is substituted by a small gauge atop the triple clamp. The analog speedo is augmented with a miles-to-empty LCD readout, replacing the old fuel gauge that looked like a filler cap at the top of the tank’s left side.
Although the Blackline is fundamentally a familiar Softail, the H-D boys have made changes that pushed the legal limits. It all began by pulling the rear fender down as low as possible – the first thing done to this project – which helped bring the seat height down to 26.1 inches, the lowest two-up seat offered by the Milwaukee crew. Similarly, the mirrors are pushed inboard to the DOT minimum, and the upper triple clamp was made as thin (1 inch) as they could get away with while maintaining structural integrity.
“We tried to make it look as illegal as possible,” says Ray Drea, VP and Director of H-D Styling Department.
The minimalist theme carries over to the rear of the bike. A narrow (144mm) tire, borrowed from the pre-’08 Touring platform, is a middle finger to the tired fat-tire movement. Its rear fender is nicely bobbed and further cleaned up with Harley’s combination stop/tail/turn lights. A composite license-plate holder mounts to the lower edge of the fender. The rear fender struts are left in their raw forged finish and powdercoated matte black.
The stripped-and-lean theme is continued with the wide spacing of the FX 41mm fork tubes that make the 5.75-inch headlight look tiny, and a gap between the nose of the seat and the fuel tank exposes the top of the frame, contributing to the bike’s airiness.

The Blackline’s back end is narrow and trim, aided by turn-signals that double as the brake light.

The Blackline’s V-Twin is beautifully detailed with interesting surface finishes. Note the chrome lines leading into the horseshoe oil tank.
Just like other Softails, Harley’s counterbalanced TC96B powers the Blackline through a 6-speed transmission, but it boasts a fresh two-tone look. Its lower end is powdercoated gloss black, accented with silver powdercoat on the cylinder heads with machined highlights. Chrome brightwork is provided on its derby and timing covers and its simple, round air cleaner, followed by a chrome over/under shotgun exhaust. “Just enough shine to make the black parts look blacker,” says Harley.
Not Just Glides For Geezers!
2011 Harley-Davidson Softail Blackline
Harley’s Mike Lowney on stage at Don Hill’s pub, preaching the Dark Custom gospel to media from around the globe.
As the average age of H-D owners creeps upward, the MoCo’s Dark Custom line has been successful at reaching a younger demographic.
Michael Lowney, Director of H-D’s Market Outreach, says Harley sold more bikes to the 18-to-34 year-old segment over the past two years than the total sales of Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, Triumph and Victory combined!
Harley now has the #1 market share position in all displacement classes among the 18-34 demo. Lowney says H-D’s 18-34 customers are split into thirds: first-timers, conquest sales, and repeat buyers.
For whatever reason, younger riders are attracted to the black-intensive Dark Custom line, which includes the Iron 883, Nightster, Forty-Eight, Street Bob, Fat Bob, and Crossbones. But Harley has been proffering the dark theme for decades. It may have begun back in 1981 with the Sturgis, a blacked-out FX platform, followed more recently by the Night Train, which was dropped only a couple of years ago and also sold well among young adults.
The Blackline’s riding position is aggressive, with a fists-forward reach to the narrow, internally wired handlebar. H-D’s designers first tried to fashion clip-on handlebars, but they proved to be hard to fit while maintaining adequate steering sweep, and they’d also take away customization options. Forward foot controls are polished.
The axles of the 21-inch front wheel and 16-inch rear are set 66.5 inches apart, while the rake angle is laid down to 30 degrees. As is typical of Harley’s slammed cruisers, lean angles when cornering are quite limited: just 24.4 degrees to the left and 25.9 to the right. Rear-suspension travel is a decent 3.6 inches.
Braking duties are handled by 4-piston calipers biting on 292mm rotors front and rear, which should be adequate for the Blackline’s 683-lb fully fueled weight. Anti-lock brakes are available in an optional $1195 package that includes H-D’s Smart Security System.
2011 Harley-Davidson Softail Blackline
The Blackline’s riding position has an aggressive forward lean for a cruiser. The diminutive passenger seat demands a cozy grip.
Although the Blackline began as a side project for Ketterhagen, Harley’s team of 12 designers all had their input, including the legendary Willy G Davidson. Harley’s Ray Drea describes the styling process as organic, adding the team reviews everyone’s projects each week. “We expect to have the garbage can filled with ideas,” Drea says about the synergetic progression.
The Blackline is now en route to dealers, retailing for $15,499 in its Vivid Black base version. An extra $499 buys your choice of Cool Blue Pearl or Sedona Orange.

CUPERTINO, CA – Ducati North America has announced the Ducati Community, a cutting edge social media site for Ducati enthusiasts to come together and share their experiences via photo, video and written anecdotes.
The Ducati Community, being launched first in North America, was designed with the intent to connect Ducati enthusiasts from all over the world. Electric Superbike to tackle Pikes Peak
From Torque PR
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- The 89th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will include the most powerful motorcycle to enter the historic event in history when it roars away on June 26.
Chip Yates of Aliso Viejo, CA will be racing his 240bhp, 365lb/ft electric superbike in an Exhibition PowerSport Division showing when America’s second-oldest motor sport event gets underway in Colorado Springs.
Yates’ bike is currently set up for conventional tracks, where he made history by placing second in a race against gasoline superbikes earlier this year. His entry on Pikes Peak this summer heralds a completely new challenge for Yates and his unbelievable motorcycle.
“We’re ecstatic to have been invited by Pikes Peak International Hill Climb officials to compete in this epic event,” said the 39-year-old Yates. “The course is almost completely paved, but I will be challenged by several miles of dirt in the middle of the climb and I’ll be calling on my previous SCCA Pro Rally driving experience to get safely through the lower grip sections. Our engineers are busy developing new traction control software and mapping that will automatically adapt based on my position on the mountain.”
Yates and his SWIGZ Racing team achieved the seemingly impossible in January at the Auto Club Speedway in California, with two podium finishes for their electric superbike during its global racing debut, competing against a competitive field of highly-developed gasoline-powered race machines, including Ducati 848s, NCR-Ducatis, Honda RC51s, and Suzuki SV650s.
Despite only six laps of pre-race testing, the privately owned and developed machine exceeded all expectations in its two race outings. Yates achieved an astonishing third place in the premier WERA Heavyweight Twins Superbike race, starting on the third row of the grid, and going one better in the WERA Heavyweight Twins Superstock race to finish second and post the fastest lap of the race at a 1:39.792.
“We are thrilled to have Chip on the Hill this year with his amazing bike,” said Hill Climb motorcycle referee Sonny Anderson. “Our Exhibition PowerSport Division is designed for new technology, and what he brings is exactly that. Our fans are in for something special.”
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb includes powerful cars, trucks and motorcycles racing up a 12.42-mile, 156-turn course. Traditionally, supermotos or other dirt-capable motorcycles enter the race, with Ducati MultiStradas piloted by Greg Tracy and Gary Trachy winning titles last summer.
More information on Yates and the bike can be found at: www.chipyates.com.
Pedrosa to undergo surgery
From Repsol Honda
After several medical tests by Dr. Eusebio Sala Planell, a specialist in vascular surgery, Repsol Honda MotoGP rider Dani Pedrosa has been diagnosed with intermittent compression of the subclavian artery, causing numbness and lack of strength in his left arm.
Pedrosa, who underwent surgery last October to set a double fracture of his left collarbone after a crash in the Grand Prix of Japan, will undergo a new operation following his participation in the Grand Prix of Spain this weekend and will make the most of a month of relaxation offered by the calendar as a result of the postponement of the Grand Prix of Japan.
In the operation, the titanium plate and screws will be taken out of the collarbone in order to release the compression pressure. The Spanish rider will start rehabilitation immediately after and resume activity in Estoril for the Grand Prix of Portugal on May 1.
“It’s never nice to have an operation, but we've had a lot of time searching for an answer to the effects of this injury and I’m relaxed because I finally know what has happened," Pedrosa said. "Now, we are in Jerez and I want to concentrate on the race, working with my team in best possible way to prepare the Grand Prix. This race is special, the crowd is always there to give you an extra point and I hope it helps me, as always. I like the track, I’ve had always good results here and I face the weekend with an open mind, trying to do my best in my current condition."

2011 Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide Review
So, the Street Glide is obviously one of the most desirable bikes on the market, and it reaches its zenith of appeal in the 2011 CVO edition tested here.
Harley’s Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) division takes standard H-Ds and fits them with extra chrome, custom paint, loads of accessories, and special Screamin’ Eagle high-performance powerplants to create the pinnacle of Harley’s lineup. “CVO motorcycles,” says the Motor Company, “define the ultimate vision of Harley-Davidson styling, features and performance.”
The successful Street Glide again gets the CVO treatment for 2011. It’s a highly desirable light-duty touring cruiser.
The successful Street Glide again gets the CVO treatment for 2011. It’s a highly desirable light-duty touring cruiser.
There are four limited-production CVOs for the 2011 model year. At the top end of the scale is the $36,999 Road Glide Ultra we recently tested, followed by the Ultra Classic Electra Glide ($36,499). The CVO Street Glide slots in above the $29,599 Softail Convertible.
At a $32,499 MSRP, the Street Glide CVO is a business-class ticket among V-Twin baggers, but it takes just a cursory glance at the CVO-SG to recognize its premium quality – whether in terms of paint quality, depth of chrome or finish details. Expensive bits on are display everywhere you look, which helps justify the pricey initial outlay.
CVO owners aren’t afraid of being bold. The Glide’s exclusive paint scheme is offered in four color combos, each with its own specific finishes for the engine, wheels and muffler end caps.
CVO owners aren’t afraid of being bold. The Glide’s exclusive paint scheme is offered in four color combos, each with its own specific finishes for the engine, wheels and muffler end caps.
Helping distinguish the CVO from lesser Glides are new Agitator wheels in the terrific Contrast Chrome finish. The 19-incher up front is the largest-diameter wheel ever fitted to an H-D touring motorcycle, and it’s complemented by floating 300mm Agitator brake rotors and a style-matching 18-inch rear wheel. A “slammed and trimmed” front fender tightly hugs the tire’s curve.
As is typical of CVO models, the SG is slathered in deep, rich chrome. The lovely hand and foot controls are from Harley’s Rumble Collection, and the blingy brightwork is carried over to the fork sliders, dipstick and trick, push-button fuel door, among a myriad of other places.
If you’re a fan of attractive rear ends, the CVO SG will turn you on. A pair of vertical LED tail lamps are cleanly frenched in to the area between the extended saddlebags and the rear fender, providing stop lights and turn signals in one nicely integrated design under smoked lenses. The rear view is punctuated by tasteful billet end caps on the exhaust’s dual mufflers.
Six speakers and a standard iPod nano provide a premium audio experience on the road. Note also the flush-mount filler cap and LED fuel gauge atop the fuel tank.
Six speakers and a standard iPod nano provide a premium audio experience on the road. Note also the flush-mount filler cap and LED fuel gauge atop the fuel tank.
The CVO SG also gets a unique fuel tank. It began life as a 6.0-gallon cell from a Road King, but it’s been customized with a flush-mount gas filler on the right, with a matching LED fuel gauge on the left. A new low-profile console is accented with a unique “liquid metal” tank medallion.
As you’d expect from the CVO division, it lacks nothing in terms of standard accessories, which include cruise control, ABS, bag liners and H-D’s Smart Security System.
“The theme this year is big audio,” said Randy Klopfer, CVO’s team manager, at the CVO’s press launch.
And the SG backs up that statement with a 100-watt-per-channel stereo that delivers tunes to no less than six speakers. In addition to typical audio functions and XM Radio, the SG comes equipped with an 8GB iPod nano (etched with Harley’s bar-and-shield logo) that docks in a holder in the right saddlebag. Two full-range speakers and two tweeters kick sound at a rider from the color-matched fairing cockpit, while clarity and bass response is augmented by a pair of 6.5-inch speakers located in the fairing lowers.
All 2011 CVOs are set apart from regular OEM Harleys by the fitment of the Screamin’ Eagle Twin-Cam 110-cubic-inch motor. This fuel-injected engine’s extra displacement gives it a factory crankshaft rating of 115 ft. lbs. of torque at its 4000-rpm peak. That’s up significantly from the 96-cubic-incher’s claimed 92.6 ft-lbs at 3500 rpm. A high-torque starter and a stronger clutch handle the big engine’s extra demands.
Harley’s TC110 powerplant displaces 1803cc and is only available from the factory in CVO models. It boasts a 19.5% increase in peak torque over H-D’s standard TC96.
Harley’s TC110 powerplant displaces 1803cc and is only available from the factory in CVO models. It boasts a 19.5% increase in peak torque over H-D’s standard TC96.
We’ve become big fans of Harley’s Touring line since the total chassis overhaul in 2009, and the Street Glide proves to be the most manageable FL of the bunch. The low-profile 130/60-19 front tire responds with sharper reflexes than the taller rubber on other FLs, and the SG does well to hide its considerable 852-lbs fully fueled wet weight. Dual 4-piston front calipers and standard anti-lock control provides stout speed retardation.
Short riders are aided in handling that bulky mass by a new low-profile seat located just 27.4 inches off the ground, but it comes at the cost of a minute 2.0 inches of rear suspension travel. The seat itself, with simulated snakeskin inserts and matching passenger backrest, is quite comfortable, but the slammed suspension can be harsh over big bumps. The 41mm fork’s 4.6 inches of travel has an easier time sucking up large impacts. If tilting horizons is on tap, you’ll want to crank up the hydraulic rear preload to achieve Harley’s claimed 32 degrees of lean angle on the right; 30 degrees on the exhaust side.
The Street Glide is one of the most nimble V-Twin baggers around.
The Street Glide is one of the most nimble V-Twin baggers around.
The CVO SG’s cockpit is a pleasant place to watch the miles roll up in front of you. The 7-inch tinted windscreen (from the Electra Glide) provides better protection than lesser SGs while still offering a suitably sporty style. A very neutral riding position helps the rider feel fully in control and comfortable. The audio system sounds great, the cruise control holds steady speeds, and the self-canceling turnsignals perform flawlessly.
"The CVO SG’s cockpit is a pleasant place to watch the miles roll up in front of you."
We were grateful to have the TC110 motor on our ride around Lake Tahoe that took us upwards of one mile high, elevations that would have the TC96 gasping for air. Throttle response is exemplary, and vibration from the big-cube motor is isolated from the rider at all cruising speeds, aided by the overdrive gear in the 6-speed transmission.
The Street Glide is one of our favorite Harleys, and this CVO version ratchets up the performance, finish quality and luxury items to give it even greater appeal. As a light-duty touring rig, it’s nearly perfect, spoiled only by minimal rear suspension and a fairly limited stowage capacity.
Stylin’ while Glidin’.
Stylin’ while Glidin’.
A regular OEM Street Glide retails for nearly $18,000 with color options, which sounds reasonable next to the CVO’s $32.5K MSRP. But for the “alpha riders” who Harley says are its CVO customers and for whom money doesn’t seem to be a problem, this tarted up Glide will satisfy for its luxury, amenities and exclusivity – just 3700 or so will be built.

BMW K 1600 GT
BMW is careful not to mark the GTL as a luxury tourer, preferring to coin the term "top tourer," which are rightly meant to evoke a more sporting character. A great deal of work has gone into providing the new K bike would definitely be fun to drive, which was all geared to save weight and maintaining a bicycle in a row. The new BMW engine is a bit "less than 22" wide, making it comparable with most in line four. Was achieved by dividing only 5mm between the cylinder liner (0.197th per inch).
BMW K 1600 GT
The limitations of the technology of metals would have done it before unthinkable two decades. The entire engine, gearbox, clutch and generator, weighs only £ 226th These statistics indicate a very good job with great cycling ability and agility, which promises to relate more as a sport bike to bike from a distance.
BMW K 1600 GT
BMW is working to distinguish the two bikes, preferring to market K 1600 GT in most sports experience, with emphasis on a pilot (though it would be enough passengers in all). The GT is designed to cover a lot of distance in a short period of time. The GTL fulfills the role of the more attractive choice for driving in two, promising to offer superior comfort, while remaining relatively sporty.

Melandri and Checa share Donington spoils
From Pirelli
DONINGTON PARK, UK - The two riders who won the World Superbike races at Donington Park on Sunday, Carlos Checa and Marco Melandri, are the two who leave at the head of the championship chase, with Checa now on 91 points and Melandri on 72.
Superpole winner Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) used his experience to change his rear tire choice for race two and improve from a third place to be a clear winner, while Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team) made two great recoveries from a third row start to post a win and a second place.
Jakub Smrz (Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati) nearly won the first race, with the local fans having something to cheer about as Leon Camier (Aprilia Alitalia) went third in race two, to make up for a hard first round in Australia that was badly affected by illness. 2010 World Champion Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia) had his drama-laden weekend turn into a mini-crisis as he finished only seventh in race one, and was excluded from race two after jump starting and failing to come in for a ride-through penalty.
In the overall championship third place belongs to Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) on 53 points after two fourths on Sunday, while Biaggi has 49 points in fourth overall.
New World Superbike rider Melandri took only three races to record his first win, finally overhauling long time leader Smrz to take the first race by 2.455 seconds.
The last podium place went to Checa after he passed local hero Haslam with two corners to go.
Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) scored fifth and Noriyuki Haga (Pata Racing Aprilia) was sixth, one place up on the factory bike of Biaggi.
A potentially great finish for Tom Sykes and his Kawasaki Racing Team Superbike machine ended in a crash at the redesigned Esses section.
“It has been an awesome race for me, very tough and at the start many guys were very aggressive,” said Melandri. “I kept my rhythm and when I got on my own I caught Camier and some others then it took some time to get to Haslam. After that it was only a few laps to go and 'Kuba' was pretty far ahead. I just kept the best pace I could and in the end Smrz’s pace was gone and I passed him. We missed a little bit of top speed but the package was very balanced, we won and I had a lot of fun.”
Checa controlled race two from the early laps and won by 3.397 seconds from race one victor Melandri. Camier was a contender for second for long periods, before Melandri upped the pace and left him behind.
Another Leon, this time Haslam went fourth for the second time, despite running off track at one point. Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Racing Team) was a great fifth on the new ZX-10R machine, despite not yet being at full fitness.
With Rea sixth for Honda and race one retiree Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare) seventh in race two there were seven different manufacturers represented in the top seven places, proving how competitive the 2011 season is after only two rounds.
“It is a fantastic beginning to the season, especially this victory in Donington, which is something special,” said Checa. “Basically we decided to put on a different tire with better grip at the beginning, so now I was stable and had good grip. At the end the tire dropped down a little but it was good enough. Everybody knows what happened here to me many years ago, when I lost something so now I’m quite satisfied to win at Donington!”
Yamaha ParkinGO riders Luca Scassa and Chaz Davies contested the win in the 22-lap Supersport race, with Davies 0.270 seconds down at the flag. Gino Rea took the final podium place for his Step Racing Honda team, as Robbin Harms (Harms Benjan Racing Honda) went fourth and Kawasaki Motocard.com rider Broc Parkes secured fifth place.

Biaggi leads Italian 1-2 at Donington
Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia) scorched round the new-look Donington Park circuit in a blistering time of 1 minute 28.794 seconds on Friday to head off a challenge from Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike) as the World Superbike riders concluded their first qualifying session.
Biaggi's final advantage over Melandri was just a fraction, with the two Italians the only riders into the 1:28 bracket.
Carlos Checa was also on the pace, grabbing the lead in the middle of the session, but the Althea Racing man eventually ended up third, while Eugene Laverty (Yamaha World Superbike) completed the overnight front row.
The hard-fought session saw a series of surprises as both Leon Haslam and Troy Corser were up among the frontrunners for a while on their BMW S 1000RR machines, together with Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Racing Team), while two fallers today were Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia) and Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare).
Following his win in the opening World Supersport round of the season, Italian Luca Scassa (Yamaha ParkinGO) continued his excellent run of form by setting the provisional pole at the end of Friday afternoon's first qualifying session. His time of 1:31.232 was just a fraction quicker than Britain's Sam Lowes, in second place on the Parkalgar Honda machine.
The two Motocard.com Kawasaki ZX-6Rs were next up, with Australia's Broc Parkes ahead of Spain's David Salom.

Doohan to attend Isle of Man TT
From the Isle of Man TT
Former Grand Prix World Champion Mick Doohan, who won five consecutive 500cc World Championships in the late nineties, has confirmed that he will be visiting the Isle of Man for the 2011 TT Races.
His visit to the Isle of Man includes starting the Monster Energy Supersport 2 Race and presenting the trophies for the PokerStars Senior TT. He will also complete an Arai parade lap on a Honda Fireblade with five-time 2010 TT Champion Ian Hutchinson on Wednesday June 8 as well as being a VIP Guest in the hospitality suite. He will be meeting fans on Thursday June 9 as part of the 'Day of Champions'.
The popular Australian is widely considered to be one of the greatest motorcycle racers in the history of the sport. Only Giacomo Agostini with eight and Valentino Rossi with seven have won more World Championships.
Riding for Honda, he won his first 500cc world championship in 1994 and dominated the class until 1998, winning five consecutive championships. In 1997, his most successful year, Doohan won 12 out of 15 races, finishing second in another two and crashed out of the final race of the season at his home GP when winning by more than six seconds.
In 1999, following an accident in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, Doohan announced his retirement.
"I'm really looking forward to visiting the Isle of Man and seeing a race or two," Doohan said. "I'm a massive fan of all bike sport and the TT Races has a huge pedigree and is obviously world famous so I want to go and see what all the fuss is about. I have a great respect for what those guys do there - I've seen some YouTube footage and its looks mad. I'm sure when I'm sitting in someone's front garden with a beer or a cup of nice English tea it will look even madder."
Following his trip to the Isle of Man, Doohan will also be visiting Silverstone to see the British leg of the MotoGP Championship.
Maybe The Nice Moosey Will Move
"I'll rev the engine a bit. That should get her moving."
You know that I'm not a fan of loud exhaust. The whole "loud pipes save lives" argument never held water with me. Supposedly, a loud exhaust will make drivers in their cars hear you better, and, the reasoning goes, will help them to be alerted to your presence. Which is good because people in cars don't pay much attention to anything smaller than they are. What the loud pipe crowd fails to acknowledge is that the sound coming out of the exhaust is directed BEHIND you. Sure, you have a bit of a rumble zone, but the blast goes out the back, alerting THOSE YOU'VE ALREADY PASSED that you're there.
I know guys that aren't happy until they can rap the throttle and set off a car alarm. And it may piss off those that might ever read this, but I'm calling you out - the reason you have loud pipes is to be cool and scare the straights. To each their own. That’s what America is all about. Me? Well I never saw a reason. I'm confident in the size of my . . . um . . . maleness. However, should one of the many fine manufacturers of after-market exhaust advertise that their products would scare the hell out of a moose or a bear, I'd have my money on the counter so quick you'd think I was a congressman on a fact-finding tour of a house of ill repute five minutes before closing.
So, I give the throttle a good crack. Nothing. The exhaust on the Vision isn't nearly as quiet as a lot of bikes I've ridden, but I might as well be miming my actions for all the response I'm getting from the moose.
I rev again and again. Nada.
"She's not going to move, is she?", Mom says with utter despair.
"It's okay. I'll honk the horn, that will get her moving."
All the while I expect THE BEAR to pounce on us at any moment. I honk the horn. I honk the horn again. I honk the horn one more time, and I can't be sure, but I believe the moose raised her front hoof and flipped us off.
"Umm . . . ", Mom says, "did the moose just flip us off?"
"I believe it did sweetie. I believe it did."
"What are we going to do?"
Good question that. Amazing question. I vote for wetting our pants and crying like three-year olds.
"Well, let's give it a minute. Maybe the nice moosey will move on her own."
*** the journey continues ***
MotoGP unites to help Japan
The MotoGP community has moved to do all it can to support those in Japan following the recent earthquake and its after-effects, and the 17 riders in MotoGP have put their signatures on a specially printed shirt with the message “We are for Japan."
The t-shirt will be available at a range of circuits on the World Championship calendar, as well as being available from the MotoGP official website at weforjapan.motogp.com. It can be purshased for €20.
The funds collected through this initiative will be presented to a humanitarian organization during the Japan Grand Prix, which is scheduled to take place on Oct. 2.
“We must give our maximum support to Japan at a moment such as this," said defending MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo. "Japan is already a strong country that has always demonstrated its ability to overcome adversity. A strong embrace to all Japanese people and fans of motorcycling who live there.”
Added Casey Stoner, winner of last weekend's season opener in Qatar, "We considered the floods in Australia at the beginning of the year a huge disaster, but after the events we've seen in Japan - it's beyond what we can comprehend. Having heard some of the stories from colleagues in Honda and seeing the coverage on the news, it's devastating to hear what they are going through and our hearts and thoughts are with everyone in Japan. I hope they can find the courage to keep fighting and get through this period to help rebuild their lives."
