Motorcycle industry reports growth

By John Hopkins

TORONTO, ON -- Sales of motorcycles, mopeds and scooters in Canada enjoyed massive growth between 1998 and 2002, according to a press release from the Motorcycle and Moped Industry Council (MMIC).

The MMIC refers to an Annual Industry Report that says new sales of street, dual-purpose, competition and off-road recreation motorcycles, along with mini-bike and scooter sales rose by 49 per cent in the five-year span.

Additionally, the release quotes a 2003 Retail Outlet Profile survey of 1,149 motorcycle and ATV outlets, conducted by the MMIC, in which 55 per cent of respondents reported an increase in new sales of motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and ATVs.

"The surge in sales corresponds to a surge in popularity and interest by Canadians who want to enjoy the exhiliration of motorcycling," said MMIC president Robert Ramsay. "Our association does all it can to encourage safe and responsible motorcycling in Canada."

The MMIC has launched a "Welcome to Our Family" campaign geared toward new and returning motorcycling riders. Three information brochures included in the campaign provide tips on purchasing and insuring motorcycles as well as rider training information.
