TORONTO, ON -- Pirelli will make a major increase in its participation in Canadian road racing this season as part of an expanded contingency program across North America.
The company will be involved in nine provincial series, as opposed to just two in 2004, and continue its involvement with the Parts Canada Superbike Championship, according to a press release from Pirelli Racing issued today.
Pirelli's total road racing contingency postings in North America will exceed $2.5 million (U.S.), an increase of almost $300,000 from 2004, the release said. This is the second year Pirelli has posted over $2.3 million (U.S.) in road racing contingency.
Pirelli will pay finishes as deep as 10th place, depending on race organization and class, and it has lifted the restriction that limited contingency payments to a racer's best four finishes over the course of a race weekend.
All details of the program are available by going to the "Pirelli Racing Contingency" link on the company's U.S. website, www.us.pirellimoto.com, or by contacting its Canadian race vendor, Orion Motorsports at 416-414-9911.

Motovan sponsors CMRC Series
From Motovan Corporation
BOUCHERVILLE, QC -- Motovan Corporation has finalized an agreement with the CMRC to become the official sponsor for the 2005 and 2006 Canadian Motocross Series. From regionals to provincials, and from national qualifiers to the nationals, Motovan and its suppliers will be directly involved in every aspect of the series.
This is by far the largest commitment Motovan Corporation has ever made directly to the Canadian Motocross scene.
The CMRC approached Motovan in mid-February with the opportunity to sponsor the Canadian series. Negotiations began between the CMRC and Motovan as well as between Motovan and its suppliers for interest in the title sponsorship of the various series.
With over 120 events, from Amateur to Pro, Motovan and its suppliers will have a dominant presence in the motocross scene during the coming season.
"Two thousand and five marks Motovan's 25th anniversary and what better way to celebrate than to step up with a serious commitment to the off-road industry," said Mike Paladino, marketing director, Motovan Corporation. "This sponsorship is a win-win situation for all involved; this agreement is beneficial for the series, for Motovan, for our suupliers, for our dealers and for the riders.
"Sponsoring the CMRC for the next two years helps demonstrate our commitment to the brands we carry, and to their promotion within the Canadian market."
Several of Motovan's strongest brands will be involved in the series sponsorship. At the national level, exclusive national sponsors will include Kenda for tires, Silkolene for lubricants and Shoei for helmets. Sponsors for the regional provincial series will include Answer, MSR, Mx No Fear, Bridgestone, Maxima, Motul, JT Sprockets, Uni-Filter, Yuasa, KBC, Motion Pro, ITP, All Worried MX and Quadrax.

Jennings belongs to Picotte
From cdnsuperbike.com
JENNINGS, FL -- The first official Parts Canada Superbike Championship pre-season test session at Jennings GP in North Florida belonged to Pascal Picotte.
After setting the fastest overall time on Monday afternoon, and the top 600 and Superbike times this morning, the Picotte Performance Yamaha rider was once again on fire during the last leg of the two-day test. Mid-afternoon, Picotte turned a lap a mere 0.4 seconds off the outright track lap record. The Dunlop slick equipped Picotte set the overall fastest lap of one minute 15.959 seconds, as timed by the official series Yamaha dBcom Timing System, halfway through this afternoon's session on his brand new 2005 Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike.
The official Jennings GP lap record, a 1:15.5, was set in January by Robert Jensen on a Michelin shod Yamaha. With a busy two days of chassis set up for four Yamahas, Picotte wasn't inclined to hunt for the Jennings outright marker, even though he got oh-so-close.
The fastest Hindle 600 Sport Bike time of the afternoon (1:16.704) also went to Picotte's R6. The reigning quadruple National Champ was sporting his new "race replica" leathers that will be available - with the Picotte Jester on the back - through both American Yamaha and Yamaha Canada.
Second fastest this afternoon was DXS Diablo Suzuki rider Francis Martin, knocking more than a second off his best time from this morning with a 1:16.764 on the brand-new GSX-R1000. Coming off a rough outing at Daytona, Martin looked re-energized following a productive two days aboard the third generation, new for 2005 "Gixxer." Martin rode for Suzuki Canada on the Parts Canada tour from 2001 through 2003.
Popular un-retired American veteran Tom Kipp was able to work out some of the "chatter" issues with the immaculate Canadian Kawasaki ZX-10R to end the day with the third fastest Superbike time of 1:17.586.
Diablo rider Steve Crevier rode his street stock Honda CBR1000RR to the fourth quickest time of 1:18.202. This was slightly slower than the 1:18.200 set by the six-time Canadian Superbike champion on his CBR600RR - the same bike he will race at the AMA round at Barber Motorsport Park this weekend. Crevier had both AMA Xtreme spec and Supersport CBR600RRs at his disposal during the Jennings sessions.
Canadian Kawasaki's Matt McBride dropped his Superbike time to a 1:20.187 from this morning's 1:20.240 on the ZX-10R, but didn't better his 600 Sport Bike time from the morning session.
It was another scorcher of a day at Jennings, with outside temperature in the low 80's (ºF) and a track temperature again hovering around the 118ºF (48ºC) mark.

Middleton moving at Muddy Creek
By John Hopkins
Ontario-based motocross racer Trevor Middleton traveled south of the border to compete at Muddy Creek in Tennessee last weekend.
According to an email report from Middleton, he managed solid results in the 4-Stroke class, placing sixth in the first moto and fourth in the other aboard his Edge Performance Kawasaki KX250F.
Middleton also raced the 250 four-stroke in the 125B division, but could only manage a 13th in moto one before crashing on the final lap while holding down fourth spot in moto two.
Middleton’s opening ride in the 4-Stroke class featured an impressive final lap as he passed three riders to claim sixth. A poor start marred the second moto but he fought his way from just inside the top 15 to get as high as second before confusion with a lapped rider on the final lap dropped him to fourth.
Rough starts hampered Middleton’s efforts in the 125B class. In the first moto he battled up to sixth but a tangle with another rider relegated him to a 10th place finish. He managed his best start of the day in the last moto and ran fourth until the final lap, when he went down after his front end washed out.
“Four-stroke class went really good for me,” Middleton said in his email. “Results should have been a lot better in B class, but you learn from your mistakes so just keep practicing them.”

Snelgrove rules Rodney
By Brett Lee
RODNEY, ON -- Perfect weather greeted riders in Rodney, ON at Rodney Moto Valley for the most recent CMRC Ontario event of the 2005 season last weekend. The dry weather that led up to this race forced the hard working track crew to work overtime. They delivered a high quality race, their best to date, for the riders from all over Ontario.
In GP Pro-Am action Hully Gully Yamaha ace Kyle Snelgrove decimated the field aboard his potent Yamaha 450F in the two grueling 25-minute motos. Behind Snelgrove, Chris Colenutt rode his AXO-backed Honda to a head turning 2-2 finish, for second overall. The battle behind him was tight between Chad Valenti (third overall), Ryan McFarlan (fourth overall), Bill White (fifth overall) and 14-year-old Suzuki mounted Kurtis Jack (sixth overall).
Racing was exciting in all classes. Suzuki-mounted Jolene Van Vugt took the overall in Womens action ahead of Edge Performance's Codi-Rae Ingram and WCK's Kim Emery.
Hully Gully/KR Communications' Kyle Ward was untouchable in 80cc 12-16 and Supermini action with perfect 1-1-1-1 finishes.
Riders were impressed by the improvements made at Rodney Moto Valley. The water system, enhanced track and improved pits were obvious.
“We are trying, and we are glad the riders see it. By the next race we want the watering system to be further improved, and we will have the compost added,” commented promoter Ed Roodzant. “We hope all the riders spread the positive comments we heard today.”
Rodney Moto Vally is open all year for practices, and will hold another CMRC race on July 10.
CMRC action moves to Auburn Hills Raceway this coming weekend for the second Motovan.com Amateur National Qualifier. For more information contact the CMRC at 905-642-5607, or visit www.cmrcracing.com.

John Nelson
By John Hopkins
with files from Colin Fraser
BELLEVILLE, ON -- Canadian motorsports icon John Nelson passed away last Sunday at Belleville General Hospital after a battle with cancer.
Nelson distinguished himself as a motorcycle racer and entrant, and was the designer, co-builder and eventual complete owner/operator of Nelson International Raceway, now known as Shannonville Motorsport Park.
Born in Ireland, Nelson was the founder of Toronto motorcycle dealership Nelson Honda, which later became Ontario Honda. He was a successful club racer, and also built and sponsored rides for 1960s and seventies racing stars such as Yvon Duhamel and Mike Duff.
The first motorcycle racing event at Nelson International Raceway was held on snowy Thanksgiving weekend in 1976. In the winter of 1978/79 Nelson sold the Shannonville facility to Jack Boxstrom, but Nelson stayed on as manager, and he continued on at the track through a succession of management changes.
He helped with the design and construction of the expanded 15-turn Shannonville layout for the 1987 racing season and he continued working at the track until last fall.
A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the John Bush Funeral Home in Belleville.
Inside Motorcycles extends its condolences to the family and friends of John Nelson.

According to the CMX release, Moto Park is offering a $10 discount to all Hypersports Racing members for practice this weekend.
