BOWMANVILLE, ON – Bodhi Edie of Warman, SK beat Hamilton, ON’s Steven Nickerson in a photo finish to take the Honda CBR125R Challenge win at Mosport International Raceway on Saturday and add to his championship lead.
A typically fraught battle between the top two riders in the class came down to the final corner of the eight-lap race. Nickerson led onto the front straight but Edie was able to get alongside in the run to the checkered flag and just nip ahead at the line. The official margin of victory was 0.020 secs.
"We kept looking at each other on the cool down lap; we didn't know who had won," Edie said.
Edie now leads Nickerson by 11 points in the CBR Challenge standings, 277-266.
Ryan Appenrodt of Quesnel, BC came out on top of a spectacular battle for third. Appenrodt, Geoffrey Gerbrandt, Ryan Roche and Loic Viscasillas were separated by less than a second at the line after swapping positions all race.
Karl Robitaille was part of the lead battle with Edie and Nickerson but accidentally hit his kill switch on lap 7 and finished 10th.
The Honda CBR125R Challenge competitors will try to top Saturday's action in the second race of their doubleheader at 1:35 p.m. (EDT) Sunday.
St-Colomban, QC’s Raphael Archambault held off Rob Busby of Brantford, ON to win the first of this weekend’s two Suzuki SV650 National Cup races at Mosport and extend his lead in the series point standings.
Archambault led all the way but got no peace from Busby, who finished 0.184 secs. behind in the 10-lap race.
"Each lap I was checking behind me," said Archambault after his second straight series win. "The last lap he [Busby] was close but I just tried to keep the inside line."
Busby was hampered somewhat when he caught a backmarker in turn 8 on the final lap.
"I was getting a good drive out of Moss [onto the backstraight] but he could pull away on the straight," Busby said.
Archambault now leads Busby by 18 points in the standings, 174-156.
Philippe Masse of St-Dominique, QC was third despite losing his exhaust in turn 8 early in the race.
"It cost me a few horsepower but it was a bigger problem with my concentration," Masse said. "These bikes are loud even with the pipe."
Ottawa's Dan Henri outduelled Burlington, ON's Jody Greening for fourth place after a race-long dice.
Jeremie Hade Precourt of Granby, QC started from pole for the second race in succession but crashed out in turn 2 on lap 2.
The Suzuki SV Cup competitors close out Sunday's program at Mosport at 4:10 p.m. (EDT).
