AMA Pro Racing unveils staff

From AMA Pro Racing

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - An experienced group of motorcycle racing competition and operations professionals have been hired by AMA Pro Racing President Roger Edmondson to join the organization's new headquarters operation in Daytona Beach.

The veteran group brings more than a century of combined motorcycle competition and operations experience to AMA Pro and includes several professionals that have already taken their positions on the management team and day-to-day operations staff headquartered in Daytona Beach.

The group includes AMA Pro Vice President of Competition Roy Janson, AMA Pro Technical Director Al Ludington, AMA Pro Road Racing Director of Competition Colin Fraser and AMA Pro Road Racing Series Manager Bill Syfan.

Janson, a native of Rochester, NY, will mark his 45th year as a career motorcycle professional in 2009. Janson's first professional experience with the AMA came in 1980 when he joined the organization to work in the government relations side of the industry, specializing in public lands policy. In 1994 he left the AMA to take the position of Vice President of Operations with the promotional companies that organized and produced the AMA-sanctioned Supercross and Arenacross programs, which most recently included the popular Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series.

As AMA Pro's Vice President of Competition, Janson will oversee all of the competition related aspects of the organization's racing properties, including AMA Pro Road Racing, AMA Pro Motocross, AMA Pro Flat Track and the various other racing series that fall under the AMA Pro umbrella.

As AMA Pro Technical Director, Ludington, who is originally from Rye, NH, will oversee all technical operations for AMA Pro Road Racing, AMA Pro Motocross, AMA Pro Flat Track and other competition disciplines within the AMA Pro family.

Ludington brings more than 20 years of motorcycle racing experience to AMA Pro, primarily as a championship and race-winning crew chief and lead mechanic. He has been part of nine national championship efforts and achieved the majority of his success as a lead mechanic and later crew chief for Team Honda.

Fraser, a native of Toronto, joins AMA Pro Road Racing as Director of Competition in a continuation of the role he assumed last March. He is responsible for the running of each weekend's competition events for all of AMA Pro Road Racing and brings over 25 years of experience in race operations to the organization.

Fraser attended his very first AMA Pro Road Racing event in 1979 and a year later founded RACE, the Canadian national motorcycle road racing sanctioning body. A former professional rider, he served as both a racing instructor and Director of Competition for several racing series and organizations prior to co-founding PMP (Professional Motorsports Productions) in 1994, the operating organization of the Canadian Superbike Championship. Fraser became sole owner of PMP and Canadian Superbike in 1998.

He also has a strong background in the media side of the sport and, in addition to owning the television rights to the Canadian Superbike Championship, has extensive print journalism experience, currently serving as a Senior Editor of Inside Motorcycles.

Syfan, who is originally from Houston, began his motorcycle career as a competitive rider and remains a racing instructor today. Syfan accepted his first professional motorcycle position in 1992 with American Suzuki where his responsibilities included managing the Team Suzuki Sport road race program. He later worked for Dunlop Tire as a Motorsports Technician before joining Clear Channel Entertainment in 1999.

He joined Fraser in stepping in to operate AMA Pro Road Racing earlier this year and will fill a similar capacity in his continuing role as AMA Pro Road Racing Series Manager.

Northumberland Forest under threat

By John Hopkins

An online petition has been established by the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders in response to a recommendation that OHV use be curtailed in a majority of the Northumberland Forest.

The situation apparently came to a head during a Dec. 17 meeting of executive members of the Northumberland Trail Riders and OFTR, Northumberland County Staff, Al MacPherson of Trent University and Fred Johnson of Ogilvie and Ogilvie and Company (OOC).

According to a release from the OFTR, OOC had produced a "Facilitators Atlas" dealing with the ecological situation in the Forest. This document recommended the limitation of OHV use.

"Mr. Johnson is on the steering committee of the Monitoring the Moraine project," said the OFTR release, "whose mandate involves influencing the decision-making process in regards to the Oak Ridges Morraine (ORM) and has been advocating the position of the Nature Conservancy Council (NCC) during this process although OOC is supposed to be neutral and only facilitating the process.

"While the meeting was proposed to us as a negotiation, it was obvious from the start that the intention of the county and OOC was to remove our access to the trails that NTR has legally created. One NTR member walked out of the meeting in disgust before it was over. We probably should have joined him."

More details can be found on the OFTR website at www.oftr.ca and the online petition can be signed at http://www.petitiononline.com/OFTRNTR/petition.html.

BMW Recalls 2008 F650GS Motorcycles for Brake Disc Fastener Defect

BMW has issued a recall of certain 2008 F650GS motorcycles.

Due to production and assembly tolerances, the length of one or more of the front brake disc fasteners may be insufficient. If the length of a fastener was insufficient, this could result in the fastener not being tightened according to specifications. If this happened, the fastener could work loose from its threads. In some cases involving multiple fasteners, the brake disc could loosen, increasing the risk of a crash.

373 units are affected.

Check out my Motorcycle Recalls feature for more details.

BC rider ready for Dakar

By John Hopkins

When the 2009 edition of the Dakar rally begins on Saturday Duncan, BC's Don Hatton will be the lone Canadian in the field.

The 50-year-old will be making his first appearance in the legendary event aboard a KTM 525. Hatton was scheduled to take part in the 2008 edition, which was cancelled at the last minute due to security concerns. That led to the relocation of the rally from its traditional African home to South America. The competition starts from Buenos Aires this weekend and concludes in the Argentine capital on Jan. 18 after covering 9,574km of South American terrain.

"All indications are that it will be harder than Africa," said Hatton earlier this month. "I think it will be much more challenging, there will be tons of sand. The organizers are out to prove that it's still a tough event. Nobody has ever done the route so they don't know what to expect. They had Africa down pat. That makes me a little nervous."

When the 2008 Dakar was cancelled at the last minute Hatton thought the realization of a 30-year dream had slipped through his fingers.

"They called an extraordinary meeting at 12:00 on the Friday afternoon," he recalled. "I had moved out of my hotel room. I was ready to go. Mentally I had started the rally. There were about 1,500-2,000 people in the meeting and you could have heard a pin drop. When they made the announcement it felt like I had been punched in the stomach."

Hatton now admits that the cancellation was probably a blessing in disguise, as he had never done an African rally prior to that event. He has since competed in two desert events, the Rally Morocco and the UAE Desert Challenge in Dubai, finishing both.

"Dubai was shocking," Hatton said. "It was constant sand and intense heat -- 63 degrees in the dune bowls and 53 degrees throughout, and it didn't cool down at night. That event was probably the closest to the Dakar format."

Hatton was due to leave for Argentina last weekend to begin his final preparations for the 2009 Dakar.

Mr. Motorcycle's word challenge game

I have a challenge for you.

Rules of the game. I pick the word, you get to tie that word into motorcycles in as few words as possible. The most creative one in fewest words wins bragging rights.

The word is Potato.

I'll go first since it's my blog.

"The sound a Harley makes while idling is Potato, Potato, Potato. "

(Of course I picked the easy obvious one! It's my game!)
However, this most likely guarantees me no bragging rights.

I'll do a poll on the best one after some entries are done in comments.

You'll have three days starting tomorrow morning.

Good Luck!!!!!

Lawrence goes "green"

From Frank Wood

MISSISSAUGA, ON -- Craig Steyn of Edge Performance has announced that his Bradford, ON-based shop will be sponsor for national number 73 Doug Lawrence of Mississauga, ON in the AMA Grand National Singles Flat Track Championship. Lawrence will ride the 2009 Edge Kawasaki KX450F and will also compete in selected CMA events.

“We met Doug through an employee of mine, Drew Robison,” Steyn explained. “Doug comes highly recommended so when the opportunity came up that we could help him he came up and we worked out a deal.

"He’s a good young man who comes from a good family and although I have yet to see him ride, his standings are impressive and hopefully we can help with that.”

Lawrence will start his season with entries in the Florida flat track series, which opens Feb. 28 before moving on to the Daytona Short Track doubleheader on March 4-5.

This is Lawrence’s second career appearance for the green guys as he won the CMA 250 Junior class championship on a Kawasaki in 1998.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for the start of the season,” an enthusiastic Lawrence commented. "It’s great to be hooked up with Edge Performance. Craig has got race savvy but they’ve never been involved with dirt track before so I really want to do well for them.

"And it’s cool to be back on a Kawasaki. I won with one before, my buddy Bryan Smith rides one now and he really likes it and Henry Wiles won a GNC race on one so we know we’ve got a good basis.”

With the new AMA rules the workload and cost to get ready for '09 is much lighter than in past years.

“We’ll get a little headwork done and put an exhaust on it and a cam and that’s it for the motor,” Lawrence explained shortly after receiving the bike from Edge. “We’ll change the front and rear suspension and mount dirt track wheels and tires and we’re good to go.”

Lawrence will continue to ride for the American Harley-Davidson team on the George Evans-tuned XR750 in the AMA GNC Twins championship chase.

“George consistently goes the extra mile for us," Lawrence said. "He does way more stuff than we ask or expect. I’m especially happy to have him wrenching for us again this year. Mike Boughner is going to be dialing in our suspension and I’m really excited to be working with him.”

Petition signings at SUPERSHOW

From SUPERSHOW Events

On Dec. 4, Bill 117, introduced by Oak Ridges-Markham MPP Helena Jaczek, passed its second reading. The Bill would amend the provincial Highway Traffic Act to ban any person younger than 14 from riding as a passenger on a motorcycle.

At this weekend's North American International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Ken Venus, host of bikerradiomagazine.com, will be spearheading a petition signing in response to the proposed Bill. There will be petitions available throughout the show in various booths such as the Chrome Divas in Hall 2 and the Bonneville Streamliner display in Hall 4A.

On Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 am, Venus will take the stage in Hall 5 to initiate a mass signing that will take place in the Hall 5 Restaurant.

The MCC (Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada) will have postcards available in its booth all weekend that you can mail in individually. These will also be available at various club booths throughout the Show. Check out the MCC website at http://www.motorcycling.ca/issues/index.html for more details, and the MCC booth in Hall 4A in the ‘Century of Motorcycles’ display is a great place to ask questions about this issue.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday experience. I am truly blessed, and can say that I have nothing more that I could ever want, (except some not so important materialistic things) of course!

Seeing as I don't post pictures of my wife or kids, I'll share a couple of Christmas pictures of the cats and dog.

I don't have pictures with cats and their new mice, 'cause, well, they get them every year. I do have a few good ones though.

Can you find Beethoven the cat in this picture?

How about now?

Harley-Davidson Guarantees Sportster Trade-in Value

Even in these tough economic times, Harley-Davidson has found a way to lure more customers into their showroom: Allow trade-ins at the original sale price.

Harley has a plan to allow their customers who have already purchased a recent Sportster to trade it in on a larger model but essentially cancel the depreciation on the Sportster. Here's an excerpt from an article by Rick Barrett of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

"Harley-Davidson Inc. (HOG) has announced a new motorcycle purchase program that guarantees the trade-in value of a Sportster when traded for one of the company's more expensive bikes.

Harley riders who either buy a new Sportster or trade in their recently purchased Sportster between Dec. 26 and March 31 will get the bike's original manufacturer's suggested retail price when they trade up to one of Harley's Big Twin or VRSC motorcycles." -- Rick Barrett, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Journal Sentinel

Ducati adds dealers; ends Thunder effort

From Ducati North America

CUPERTINO, CA - Ducati North America announced on Monday a series of plans to push its Canadian market forward beginning in early 2009.

As Ducati organizes its agenda for the upcoming motorcycling season, it will focus Canadian resources on supporting the growing dealer network, switching tactics from its 2008 participation in the Canadian Thunder class of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship.

Ducati will continue to develop its Canadian business with three new destination dealerships opening in 2009, located in Montreal, Toronto and Laval. The investment in facilities by Ducati and its Canadian partner dealers is part of a very successful and growing retail design program that was introduced by Ducati North America in 2007, with the 2008 Dealernews Grand Prize winner, Erico Motorsports of Denver.

“We are thrilled with the success the NCR Ducati team had this year, and are even more excited about the ambitious new projects going on with Ducati’s Canadian dealerships," said James Viola, marketing director of Ducati North America. "The commitment being made by dealers in new stores underscores the confidence in the brand. We will continue our racing efforts in United States next year and will make a formal announcement in January regarding our direction.”

The Ducati NCR squad dominated the Canadian Thunder class championship with the 848 Superbike. The team surpassed the goals it set out to achieve in 2008 by not only capturing the championship, but winning every race and finishing 1-2 four times during the season.

DiSalvo pleased with Suzuki test

From Team M4 EMGO Suzuki

Team M4 EMGO Suzuki and Jason DiSalvo wrapped up a two-day test at Jennings GP in Jennings, FL on Monday. DiSalvo tested the team's Suzuki GSX-R600s with Dunlop 2009-spec tires at the North Florida circuit.

"We got in a full day of riding and we made a lot of progress," said DiSalvo. "It was cold, but it was good to get in some stints where we could get some data and make some changes to the bike and give the team more info for the coming season.

"I enjoyed the chance to work with a bunch of motivated guys. The crew did a fantastic job of making major changes in a short time and still keep me on the track all day. I was impressed with the efficiency in which they worked and their professionalism."

The 2009 AMA Pro Road Racing season will feature a new class structure and control tires. The team worked on its Daytona SportBikes at the test, to prepare for next season.

"Everything we did today went in a positive direction," said M4 EMGO Suzuki crew chief Keith Perry. "It was good for the team to get a chance to test with someone like Jason, who has a lot of experience on the Dunlops at the more conventional tracks. He was able to help us refine our setup, which helps because testing will be somewhat restricted this coming year.

"Mike Fitzgerald from Ohlins was at the track today and he was able to help us as well. We feel like we've got some really good info and we can head back to the shop knowing we have advanced our setup. We thought it was a very positive test. Jason felt every change we made was a step forward and we accomplished our goals."

"I thought the Dunlop spec tires worked well with the bike and the Suzuki was very predictable for me," said DiSalvo. "It's a good package and I had fun riding a first-class machine at this test. I am glad I got the opportunity."

Harley and Buell to sponsor women's event

From the American Motorcyclist Association

PICKERINGTON, OH -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has announced that Harley-Davidson and Buell are the Presenting Sponsors of the 2009 AMA International Women & Motorcycling Conference.

From Aug. 19-22 women will celebrate the freedom and control that comes with taking to the open road on two wheels at the fifth AMA Women's Conference in scenic Keystone, CO. This will be the second time the Motor Company has been the Presenting Sponsor of the conference, which will offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for thousands of women riders to come together and enjoy the camaraderie, scenic roads and informational seminars during the conference.

According to the Motorcycle Industry Council, women now account for 12.6% of all motorcycle riders, a 29% increase since 2003. As a reflection of this trend, the AMA has seen an increase in conference attendance over the years and anticipates that it will double at the 2009 event with more than 2,200 participants.

"Harley-Davidson and Buell are excited to be very involved with this incredibly important -- and fun -- event that will bring together thousands of women riders," said Leslie Prevish, Women's Outreach Manager, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. "The Motor Company has been committed to encouraging women to ride for decades -- even marketing the 1920 Sport model as 'The Woman's Outdoor Companion.'"

In addition to a wide range of daily workshops, conference attendees will have the opportunity to demo new bikes, shop for the latest gadgets and gear at the vendor marketplace, and enjoy after-hours social activities.

The conference is not restricted to women only -- attendees are encouraged to register their spouses, partners, family and friends. Keystone is located just 90 miles west of Denver.

Miller earns World Superbike award

From the FIM Superbike World Championship

ROME, ITALY -- FGSPORT has announced that the Miller Motorsports Park circuit has been given the “2008 Organizer of the Year Award" in the Superbike World Championship.

The high level of professionalism, the efforts made and the endeavours of the staff all guaranteed a high level of standards from an organizational, promotional and sporting point of view.

It is a wonderful achievement for any circuit to win this award, but it is exceptional to win it after one year of co-operation with FGSport.

“I express my warmest and most sincere congratulations to the circuit management and all its staff and wish them the very best for the season ahead," said Paolo Fammini, FGSport CEO.

The 2009 round of the Superbike World Championship at the Miller Motorsports Park circuit will take place on May 31.

DiSalvo to test for Team Hammer

From Team Hammer

Racer Jason DiSalvo was due to test for Team Hammer, which currently races as M4 EMGO Suzuki, at Jennings GP in Jennings, FL on Sunday and Monday.

"As a racer, I'm really excited to test the M4 EMGO Suzuki. I have raced against their bikes when I competed in the old Supersport and Formula Xtreme classes in the past but I've never ridden one of them before. I've always thought their bikes looked like really fast machines," said DiSalvo. "I am stoked to get back out on the track and to get a chance to ride their bike."

DiSalvo will test the team's Suzuki GSX-R600 equipment in Florida, including the race-winning machine Blake Young used to win the final AMA Supersport event of 2008 at Laguna Seca. Mechanics Michael Tjon and Mike Earnhardt will assist DiSalvo at the test. Earhnardt previously worked with DiSalvo as Jason was rising through the ranks as a talented teen racer.

DiSalvo is visiting family near the team's shop in Athens, AL and all parties thought a test would be mutually beneficial. In the recent past, Team M4 EMGO Suzuki has raced on a different tire brand than the series control tires now supplied by Dunlop. A test with DiSalvo offers the team another chance to refine its setups for the '09 season after testing at Daytona earlier this month.

The New Yorker is currently unsigned for the 2009 season and said he welcomes the opportunity to keep his riding sharp with a test.

"It's a really good opportunity and it worked out well at for the team and for me. I'm currently not signed for next season and I wanted a chance to get back on the track and ride a fast bike and get some laps in. There's a spec tire for next season and the team wanted a chance to get some more info on the Dunlop tires and I have a lot of experience on Dunlops," said Jason, who finished third in the 2008 Superbike points.
