BEST SUPERBIKE - Ducati Desmosedici RR

Strictly speaking, the Ducati Desmosedici is not a Superbike. But it is a super bike, and there is no possible way we could ignore this 200-hp, street-going MotoGP machine. Sure, its $72,500 asking price was as shocking as the fact that this bike really was a barely legalized version of a Ducati racer, but no other manufacturer has had the passion or courage to make this leap. If you factor in the money and effort it took for its development, first for racing, then for the street, and add in the decades of Ducati’s experience at the track, the price doesn’t seem so crazy.

CONTENDERS: While the Desmosedici really has no direct competition (no one else makes a true MotoGP replica), you cannot deny that cost-effective liter-class sportbikes abound, from Ducati’s own traction-control-equipped 1198S to Suzuki’s all-new GSX-R1000. Or, will it be the Yamaha YZF-R1, which incorporates MotoGP tech with its traction-enhancing “crossplane” crankshaft, that will assume the throne in 2009?
