BEST OPEN-CLASS STREETBIKE - Suzuki GSX-R1000

This is one of the coolest categories because it can embrace just about any large-displacement streetbike that has an iota of sporting intent. Last year, the GSX-R1000 took the honors for being such an amazingly good and easy-to-ride streetbike that also happened to shred on the racetrack and blaze through the quarter-mile with one of the quickest times we’ve ever recorded. Every molecule seemed to exude the competence and experience Suzuki has gained through decades of successful production-bike racing.

CONTENDERS: Recent winners have included the adventure-touring Triumph Tiger 1050 and Kawasaki’s ultra-refined big brute, the ZX-14, meaning things are always wide open, especially since Suzuki’s GSX-R1000 is brand-new this year. Other challengers for ‘09 are many: The Ducati 1098-based naked Streetfighter or the Monster 1100 could take the crown, as could Aprilia’s Dorsoduro, Mana 850 or Shiver 750, as well as Harley-Davidson’s XR1200 street-tracker, the Buell 1125CR cafe-racer or the all-new Star VMax.
