Bailey takes Amateur sweep

SHANNONVILLE, ON -- Aubrey Bailey enjoyed a perfect day in Amateur National action at Shannonville Motorsport Park on Saturday. The Parry Sound, ON rider swept both the Inside Motorcycles Amateur Sport Bike and K&N Performance Filters Amateur Superbike races on his H.T. Motorsport / ProStar / Velocity Honda CBR600RR.

The two wins came in much different fashion, however. Bailey led the Amateur Sport Bike race from start to finish, finishing 5.115 secs. up on the Garvie Racing / Kahuna Powersports Kawasaki ZX-6R of Kristopher Garvie and Samuel Proulx aboard the Sherbrooke Harley-Davidson Suzuki GSX-R600. In Amateur Superbike, however, Bailey edged Garvie by only just 0.483 secs. Jody Greening placed third on his BFE / ProStar / Sturgess Cycle Honda CBR600RR.

"I definitely wasn't expecting this going into the weekend," said Bailey. "I was just going to try and do my best and see what kind of results we could come up with.

"In the Sport Bike race the plan was to get a good jump and put in a few quick laps early. I wanted to do the same in Superbike but [polesitter] Trevor [Daley] was right on me. When I saw him off in the grass I knew someone else was right with me, and I wasn't surprised it was Garvie."

For Garvie the pair of runner-up finishes were a welcome reward after a frustrating season opener at Circuit ICAR at the end of May. There he had qualified on pole for both Amateur Nationals but crashed in the Sport Bike race, suffering a separated collarbone. The Caledon, ON racer was still feeling the effects of that injury at Shannonville and produced a gutsy effort to snag his two runner-up finishes.

In Amateur Sport Bike Garvie edged Magog, QC's Proulx and Greening in a three-bike battle behind Bailey. Fifth place went to Amzy Nawaz of Thornton, ON. Nawaz was in a battle with the Black Sheep /Elka Suspension Racing Team Kawasaki ZX-6R of Alex Coelho but the Longueuil, QC racer crashed in turn two on lap 11, bringing out a red flag and making the results official after nine laps.

Coelho was able to participate in the Amateur Superbike race later in the day on a borrowed Yamaha YZF-R1 and finished 13th. He had won the season opener at Circuit ICAR.

Behind Burlington, ON's Greening in the Amateur Superbike race the top five was filled out by Gatineau, QC's Tim Robinson on the Robinson Racing / Belko Auto Body Honda CBR1000RR and Rouyn-Noranda, QC racer Alain Lefebvre on a Suzuki GSX-R600.

Heading into Sunday's back end of the doubleheader weekend at Shannonville Garvie now leads the Amateur Sport Bike point standings with 87 points to the 81 of Proulx and Greening and Nawaz on 72. In Amateur Superbike Greening is on top with 77 points, followed by Lefebvre on 73 and Coelho on 63.
