McLean sweeps western titles

By John Hopkins

Royce McLean locked up three Expert titles in the Western Canadian Road Racing Championships during the final round at Calgary's Race City Motorsport Park on Sept. 18-19.

The 15-year-old from Coaldale, AB was crowned champion in the Superbike, Open SuperSport and 600 SuperSport divisions, to go along with his 2010 titles in the Expert Open Superbike, Expert Open Sportbike and Expert 600 SuperSport classes of the Edmonton Motorcycle Roadracing Association series. He also won the Calgary Motorcycle Roadracing Association's Middleweight Sportbike title.

McLean's most impressive performance came in Sunday's Expert 600 Supersport event. Trailing the top three by eight seconds and with the Western Canadian title on the line, the Yamaha YZF-R6 rider caught the leaders and moved into second place in the waning moments to seal the title. He added that result to fourth place finishes in Superbike and Open SuperSport.

The previous day he had claimed second place finishes in Superbike and 600 SuperSport, and a third in Open SuperSport.
